CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Evansville women's soccer team allowed just one goal to unbeaten Xavier, but it was all that the Musketeers needed, as Ashton Green's goal in the 25th minute proved to be the game-winner in a 1-0 loss for the Purple Aces Wednesday night at the XU Soccer Complex in Cincinnati.
Evansville (2-2-0) played much of the match with only 10 players due to a red card that was issued in the 22nd minute and Xavier (3-0-0) was able to take advantage, outshooting the Aces, 9-3, in the opening 45 minutes.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Simone Busby successfully stopped a penalty kick in 22nd minute to keep Xavier off the scoreboard, but Green put the Musketeers in front at the 24:25 mark on an assist from Tori Doss and the XU defense held UE without a shot on goal in the opening half.
Evansville regrouped at halftime and got its offense going in the second half by firing eight shots and putting five on goal. Freshman
Bronwyn Boswell forced Xavier goalkeeper Katie Markesbery to make the first of her five saves in the 57th minute and senior
Stephanie Thompson would put three shots on frame over the final 45 minutes, but Markesbery was able to record the shutout and give the Musketeers the victory with a pair of saves in the final three minutes of the contest.
Thompson and Boswell led UE offensively with four shots each and sophomore
Abby Springer added a pair of shots, putting one on goal. In goal, Busby made eight saves in the loss.
Evansville returns to the pitch Friday night at 7 p.m., when it hosts IUPUI at Arad McCutchan Stadium. During that match, the Aces will don orange uniforms to support the Tri-State Multiple Sclerosis Association's fight against MS.
