Aces Travel to Charlotte for Four-Game Set

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
The University of Evansville baseball team will travel to Charlotte, N.C., this weekend for a four-game set with Charlotte at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.  The series between the Purple Aces and 49ers will kick off with a doubleheader Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
 
Evansville (16-10) split a pair of midweek, non-conference games with SIU Edwardsville and Belmont on Tuesday and Wednesday, as the Aces defeated the Cougars, 15-7, in Evansville, before falling to the Bruins, 12-7, in Nashville, Tenn.  Juniors Kevin Kaczmarski and Kyle Pollock each drove in four runs apiece in the win over SIUE, as Kaczmarski hit his second grand slam in four days, and Pollock drove in three more runs with a bases-clearing double in the loss to Belmont.
 
On the mound, sophomore Alex Gould picked up his first career win by allowing just one hit in 3.0 scoreless innings against SIU Edwardsville and freshman Brian Jestice surrendered just one hit and struck out three in 3.1 scoreless frames at Belmont.
 
On the season, UE is hitting .284 as a squad with a .380 slugging percentage, including 49 doubles and nine home runs.  Evansville is reaching base at a .384 clip, as Aces' hitters have drawn 113 walks, and is 34-for-47 on the base paths.  Junior Josh Jyawook leads the team with a .374 average and .460 on-base percentage, and has driven in 21 runs, which is third-best on the team.  Pollock boasts a .349 average with a pair of homers and 23 RBI, while Kaczmarski has been the top power bat in the lineup, posting a .305 average with 11 doubles, two triples, four homers and a Missouri Valley Conference-leading 30 RBI.  Kaczmarski also leads the Aces with seven stolen bases.
 
UE's pitching staff has combined for a 4.11 ERA and 181 strikeouts against just 73 walks in 229.2 innings this season, and opposing hitters have posted a .287 average.  Junior Kyle Freeland leads Evansville with a 4-1 record and 2.03 ERA, and ranks fourth in the country with a 45:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio.  The Denver, Colo., native is limiting opponents to a .242 average and has allowed just six extra-base hits in his 40.0 innings of work. 
 
Sophomore Connor Strain, senior Cole Isom and junior Matt Rodgers are expected to fill out the Aces' rotation this weekend.  Strain enters the series with a 1-2 record and a 3.13 ERA in 23.0 innings, while Isom is 2-2 on the year with a 3.73 ERA.  Rodgers, who will be making his first weekend start is 3-0 with a 5.11 ERA, after allowing five runs on four this in 3.2 innings in a no decision Tuesday night against SIU Edwardsville.
 
Out of the bullpen, sophomore Brent Jurceka boasts an impressive 0.68 ERA, a mark that ranks 1 th in the NCAA, and .163 opposing batting average.  Jurceka has allowed just two earned runs in 26.2 frames of relief and has fanned 29 opposing hitters, while issuing just eight walks.  Senior Sam Johns leads the team with six saves and will bring a 2.87 ERA into the weekend.
 
Charlotte (7-18-1) dropped two of three games to Old Dominion in a Conference USA series last weekend in Norfolk, Va., as the 49ers dropped the first two games of the set, 7-2 and 6-2, before avoiding the sweep with an 11-4 win Sunday.
 
Charlotte is hitting .251 as a team with 34 doubles, six triples and six long balls for a .323 slugging percentage and is reaching base at a .317 clip.  The 49ers are just 5-for-11 on the base paths and fielding .956, collectively.  Mikal Hill leads the team with a .304 average, .381 on-base percentage and three stolen bases, while Logan Sherer is hitting an even .300 with a team-best 17 RBI and .410 slugging mark.  Corbin Shive has homered three times and ranks fourth on the team with 11 RBI.
 
The 49er pitching staff has posted a 4.08 ERA with 179 strikeouts, 86 walks and a .273 opposing batting average in 233.2 innings.  Ryan Butler has been the team's top starter, posting a 3.68 ERA and 1-4 record in his previous six starts, including 29 strikeouts in 36.2 innings.  Brock Hudgens is 0-3 on the year with a 4.28 ERA and a team-high 36 strikeouts in his 40.0 innings on the mound, while Corey Roberts owns an 0-3 record and 4.71 ERA in 36.1 frames.  Brandon Volger, who is 1-0 with a 0.68 ERA in 13.0 innings is also expected to make a start for Charlotte this weekend and Hunter May has tallied the lone save for the 49ers.
 
This weekend will mark the first-ever meetings between Evansville and Charlotte and fans who will be making the trip to Charlotte should be advised that there will be heavy pedestrian traffic near Hayes Stadium, due the 49ers spring football game.  Parking will be free and fans should park in either the CDI Deck or Union Deck.  Access to the CDI Deck can be gained by entering campus from Hwy. 29 at JW Clay Blvd.  The Union Deck can be accessed by using Mallard Creek Church Road.
