EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville junior
Kyle Freeland was named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season in an announcement made by the league office Monday afternoon.
Freeland became just the 14th pitcher in program history to reach the 200-strikeout plateau Friday at Charlotte, as the junior southpaw recorded a career-high 15 strikeouts in Evansville's 3-2 victory over the 49ers. Freeland allowed just two runs on four hits on the day and needed just 97 pitches to earn his fourth-consecutive victory.
The Denver, Colo., native is 5-1 on the season and is among the nation's leaders with 60:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In addition, Freeland leads the MVC with his 60 strikeouts, ranks seventh in the league with a 2.02 ERA and is currently 11th among league pitchers with a .242 opposing batting average. With his 15 strikeouts Friday, Freeland moved into 13th on Evansville's all-time strikeout list with 214 and becomes the first Valley pitcher to earn MVC Pitcher of the Week honors twice this season.
Freeland and the Aces are scheduled to be back on the diamond Tuesday night at 6 p.m., when they host Oakland City. Freeland's next start is slated for Friday, April 11, when UE hosts defending MVC Tournament champion Wichita State at Braun Stadium.
