Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Evansville Purple Aces softball team traveled to Louisville, Ky. this evening to take on the Cardinals in a mid-week contest and in a game that went extra innings, the Aces fell to Louisville, 4-3.
Junior
Megan Gurski started in the circle for the Aces and the transfer from Saskatchewan kept the Cardinals scoreless for the first two innings.
After a scoreless top of the third for UE, Louisville got on the board first with an RBI ground-out by junior Brittany Duncan.
Gurski and Louisville pitcher Rachel Le Coq, would keep both offenses off the board in the fourth and fifth innings and in the top of the sixth, the Cardinals struck again on a two run RBI single by senior Taner Fowler.
After the two run RBI single by the Cardinals,
Taylor Perry came into the game for Gurski and the senior kept the home team off the board. Gurski finished the day throwing 5.1 innings, striking out three and allowing three runs.
Heading into the seventh with a 3-0 deficit, the Purple Aces would not back down. With two runners on the bases and two outs on the board, junior
Kayla Fortner came to the plate and hit a monster two run RBI double to center field that cut the Cardinals lead down to 3-2. Freshman
Susan Norris stepped to the plate for Evansville and the third baseman hit another double to drive in Fortner and tie the game at three apiece.
Perry kept Louisville scoreless in the bottom of the seventh and this mid-week matchup would see extra innings. Perry finished her day in the circle, striking out one and allowing no runs and no hits in 1.2 innings.
The Aces threatened to score in the top of the eighth inning, but were unable to drive in a run and this is where the Cardinals took advantage.
Freshman
Briana Combs entered the circle for Perry in the eighth and the freshman would give up a crucial single to freshman Tiarra Sanabria that drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Up next for Evansville is a trip to Murray, Ky. on Thursday, April 10 to take on the Murray State Racers in a mid-week doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
