DURHAM, N.C. – University of Evansville junior Kyle Freeland was named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award in an announcement made by USA Baseball Tuesday afternoon. Freeland is one of just 21 players selected as a semifinalist for the award, which is presented to the top amateur baseball player in the U.S.
Freeland finished his 2014 campaign with a 10-2 record and posted a 1.90 ERA with 123 strikeouts against just 13 walks. The Denver, Colo., native finished 6-0 in his seven Missouri Valley Conference starts and limited Valley hitters to a .211 batting average. On the season, Freeland surrendered just 13 extra-base hits and did not concede a home run.

USA Baseball officials will announce the list of finalists for the 2014 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday, June 3. To select the finalists, the list of semifinalists is sent to a voting body consisting of past Golden Spikes Award winners, past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of media that closely follow the amateur game, selection professional baseball personnel and current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of more than 200 voters in total.
Fan voting will once again be part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2014. Fans from across the country can vote on GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of names. Voting will be open until Friday, May 30.
