EVANSVILLE, Ind. – It will be a homecoming for both
Allie Arguello and
Tatiana Pagan Friday night, when the University of Evansville women's soccer team wraps up preseason play against UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev., at 9 p.m. CT. Arguello graduated from Bishop Gorman High School, located in the southwest corner of the city, while Pagan is a graduate of Palo Verde High School, which is located just seven miles north.
Evansville fell to Wright State, 1-0, in its preseason opener last Sunday at Arad McCutchan Stadium. Junior
Kayla Smith led the Aces offensively with two shots, putting both on goal, while fellow junior
Abby Springer and freshman
Nicki Baham provided UE with its other two shots on frame.
Junior goalkeeper
Simone Busby kept Wright State off the sheet in her 45 minutes between the posts, but the Raiders were able to net the game-winner in the 52nd minute, when Addie Englehart finished a cross from Ellie Ganz at the back post with sophomore
Whitney Biggs in goal.
Evansville sent 20 different players onto the pitch in their opener and will be UNLV's lone preseason opponent.
The Rebels, who are under the direction of first-year head coach Chris Shaw, return 18 letterwinners and seven starters from last year's team that finished 10-8-3 overall and placed sixth in the final Mountain West Conference standings with a 5-5-0 mark in league play.
Midfielder Jordan Magnin will be UNLV's top returning scorer, as she scored eight points on four goals in 2013. Forward Dakota Blazak tallied seven poings (3 G, 1 A) and Denali Murnan added five points (1 G, 3 A) last season. The Rebels will have a new netminder for the 2014 campaign, as they will be without Kylie Wassell, who posted a 1.15 goals against average, five shutouts and 83 saves as a senior last season.
Evansville will begin its regular season Friday, Aug. 22, when it hosts Austin Peay at Arad McCutchan Stadium, as part of a four-game, season-opening home stand.
