EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Purple Aces women's tennis team opened up fall play today at the SIUE Fall Invitational with two rounds of doubles and a round of singles.
Highlighting the day for the University of Evansville was flight two doubles where Marketa Trousilova and Marina Moreno went undefeated. The duo topped Brooke Urzendowski and Kelsey King of Saint Louis, 6-2. They followed that up with a 6-1 win in the second round over Sierra Halverson and Lexi Aranda of SIUE.
Top flight doubles saw Mina Milovic and Natasha James open the day with a win. They topped the Billikens top pair of Aspen Cervin and Madison Cook, 7-6 (6). In the second round, they fell to the Cougar's Kali Donner and Mia Frogner, 6-2.
In the third flight, Andjela Brguljan and Gaby Fifer went 1-1 on the day. The pair defeated Maria Toro Moreno and Natalia Yacaman of SLU by a 6-2 final before coming up short against SIUE's Haley Ilcewicz and Monique Krutak, 6-4.
Singles play saw Evansville take on Eastern Illinois. The Aces picked up wins in the third and fifth flights with Brguljan topping Hannah Kimbrough, 6-2, 6-0 in the third flight. True freshman Kennedy Craig got off to a strong start. In her first collegiate action, she defeated Kamile Stadalninkaite in flight five, 6-3, 6-2.
No. 1 singles saw Trousilova fall to Kelly Iden, 6-4, 7-5, while James was defeated by Grace Summers, 6-4, 6-4, in the second flight. Moreno lost to Sephora Boulbahaiem in the fourth flight, 7-6, 6-2.
The action on Saturday commences bright and early as the Aces face SIU Edwardsville in singles action beginning at 9 a.m. Later, the Aces face Western Illinois in singles play before closing the day with a double tilt against Eastern Illinois at 5 p.m.
