Egidijus Mockevicius scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half on Sunday to help power the Purple Aces to a 75-56 victory over the UC Irvine Anteaters in the fifth place game of the Wooden Legacy at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
Mockevicius scored 10 of his 21 points as part of a 23-12 UE run midway through the second half to turn a tied game into a 60-49 Evansville lead. UC Irvine would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
"I am really proud of how our guys played today," said UE head coach
Marty Simmons. "Our guys battled hard for the whole 40 minutes.
"Overall, I was very pleased with how we played in this tournament. We improved in each game of the tournament. Now, we have a quick turnaround with Alabama State on Tuesday, and we need to continue to improve as a team."
Mockevicius finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds, as he hauled in a Wooden Legacy record 46 rebounds in the three-game tournament in which UE went 2-1 to improve to 5-1 on the season. Fellow senior D.J. Balentine and junior forward
Blake Simmons each pitched in 15 points apiece for UE in the win, while senior forward
Adam Wing added nine points, a career-high 10 rebounds and five assists.
Junior guard Jaron Martin led UC Irvine (5-2), the defending Big West Tournament champions, with 15 points off of the bench.
