EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville baseball team (8-10, 0-2) lost the middle game of the series to #18 Dallas Baptist Patriots 10-2 on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, DBU has now won the series as UE will look to avoid a sweep in the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Patriots never trailed in the game. Facing Aces right-hander
Patrick Schnieders, Dallas Baptist worked back to back walks from Drew Turbin and Camden Duzenack to set up Justin Wall for a three-run home run. Schnieders (1-3) threw over 40 pitches in the first, his only inning of work. He allowed three runs on three hits in the defeat.
"When you don't get a quality start against a very talent club, it is unfortunate," said Evansville head coach
Wes Carroll. "We dug ourselves way too big of a hole."
Reliever
Matt Rodgers then came in to pitch the second but also encountered trouble. The first five batters reached base including an RBI single from Duzenack, a run producing double by Justin Wall and a two run single from catcher Daniel Salters.
Down 7-0, UE left the bases loaded in the second against DBU right-hander Cory Taylor. The Aces cut into the deficit with a
Jonathan Ramon RBI double in the third but again left the bases loaded.
The Patriots added a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings for a 10-1 advantage.
Evansville scored another run in the ninth on a Ramon single to center field before Dallas Baptist secured the last out.
Ramon finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, his 13
th multi-RBI game in an Aces uniform.
First baseman
Eric McKibban went 1-for-3 and has now hit safely in six straight. Outfielder
Jarod Perry nearly moved his on-base streak to 19 games by reaching on an eighth inning fielder's choice.
Reliever
Brian Jestice threw a career-high 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
UE will have freshman left-hander
Brodie Harkness (2-1, 5.40 ERA) on the mound in the series finale against the DBU sophomore righty Trevor Conn (2-0, 1.00 ERA).
"Tomorrow is going to be a big game for our program and a big game for this team," added Carroll. "No one is giving up on this year and no one is giving up on this team. We are going to keep fighting and clawing and competing."
