BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It took four hours and 33 minutes as well as 14 innings of baseball, but the University of Evansville (18-15) defeated the Indiana Hoosiers 2-1 on Wednesday night at Bart Kaufman Field. Catcher
Travis Tokarek delivered the game-winning, 14
th inning RBI single to center field for the one run edge. Reliever
Brian Jestice then pitched around a bases loaded jam in the bottom half, striking out pinch hitter Christopher Lowe to secure the road win for the Purple Aces.
Â
"Tokarek came up with the big hit for us and Jestice made some big pitches there in the last inning to secure the save," said Evansville head coach
Wes Carroll. "What an overall great win for us."
Â
The Aces trailed early on when Indiana plated a run in the first on a Scott Donley RBI double. It would the lone run UE starter
Matt Rodgers or any Aces pitcher wound surrender on the night. Evansville evened up the score in the fourth inning when outfielder
Josh Jyawook led off with a double and scored later in the frame on a sacrifice fly from infielder
Jonathan Ramon.
Â
Tied at one, Jyawook kept the game tied in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and no runners on, Craig Dedelow hit a fly ball to left field that Jyawook ran down as he crashed into the waist high wall and somersaulted into the IU bullpen. Jyawook then rose to his feet on the other side of the wall and showed the ball still in his glove. The grab was also the number one play on the Top Plays segment of ESPN
Sportscenter that evening.
Â
"That was one of the most spectacular plays I have seen defensively on a baseball field," added Carroll. "Seeing him go over the wall and make a
Sportscenter Top 10 play was just magnificent."
Â
Tied at one, Rodgers and the UE bullpen kept the Aces in the game by holding IU hitless from the fourth until the 12
th inning. Pitcher
Conor Gilligan tossed a career-high 3.1 innings without allowing a hit. Fellow reliever
Brent Jurceka (2-2) followed that performance up with 3.2 innings of one-hit ball for the win.
Â
UE capitalized on a leadoff IU error in the 14
th inning for the go-ahead run.
Â
Jyawook also collected two hits, moving his hitting streak to 11 straight. Outfielder
Jarod Perry also moved his on-base streak to 34 games in the win. First baseman
Eric McKibban has now reached base in 21 straight games. The save was the first for Jestice in his collegiate career.
