EVANSVILLE – After opening the 2016 campaign a week ago, the University of Evansville baseball team will return to action this weekend with showdowns against USC Upstate, Wofford and Monmouth in Spartanburg, S.C.
"It's always a great experience to face three different teams in a tournament-type atmosphere," UE head coach Wes Carroll said. "We're going to be facing three teams that we've never played before, and we're hoping to play some good solid baseball. We need to play better than we did last weekend, and I'm anxious to see how the guys respond."
Evansville, which dropped all three meetings to South Alabama last week, will be aiming for its first victory of the young season. At the plate, the Aces hit .183 over the three games, but they did have a knack for picking up extra bases, highlighted by four different players recording a home run.
In Sunday's contest, Jonathan Ramon, Shain Showers and Boomer Synek each went yard, which was the first time in nearly two years that the Aces homered three times in a game. Trey Hair, a junior in his first season in Evansville, also homered over the weekend, and he finished as the top hitter in the series, going 4-for-9 with a pair of walks.
On the mound, both Patrick Schnieders and Brandon Gomer are slated to get starts as they look to bounce back individually from losses last weekend. Meanwhile, Sunday's starter against Monmouth is yet to be announced.
On Friday, the Aces will open the weekend against USC Upstate at 4 p.m. The Spartans are 3-1 on the year after beginning the season with victories over George Mason, Dayton and Stony Brook before falling to Wofford 6-3 on Wednesday.
Wofford, which the Aces will square off against on Saturday, is 4-0, and Monmouth is aiming to rebound from a 1-3 start.
NOTES: Since 1978, the Aces have not played USC Upstate, Wofford, and Monmouth … UE is 1-6 all-time vs. schools that hail from the state of South Carolina … The game against Monmouth will mark the first time the Aces have played a team from New Jersey.
