Baseball falls to Liberty in final game of weekend

LYNCHBURG, Va. – A four-run first inning proved to be the difference on Sunday afternoon as the University of Evansville baseball team was unable to bounce back from the early deficit, falling 5-2 to Liberty at Liberty Baseball Stadium.

"We weren't able to capitalize on scoring opportunities, really this whole weekend," UE head coach Wes Carroll said. "But that was especially true today. We played hard-fought baseball games all weekend, but things just didn't go our way. We're looking forward to getting back to Braun Stadium on Tuesday."

The loss was the third in two days for the Purple Aces (8-7), and the second at the hands of the host Flames (11-6).

Austin Allinger, who was making his third start as a part of the weekend rotation this season, picked up the loss on the mound after allowing five runs on five hits over six innings of work. He would also strike out three and walk two on the way to dropping to 2-1 on the year.

The first inning rally started almost immediately for the hosts as D.J. Artis and Will Shepherd led off the frame with walks, and an Andrew Kowalo single cashed in the opening tally. Andrew Yacyk followed up in the ensuing at-bat with a three-run blast before Allinger induced a pair of groundballs and struck out another to get out of the frame.

UE got on the board in the fifth when Nate Reeder led off with a triple before scoring on a Josh Jyawook groundout, but a Dalton Britt double in the sixth reclaimed the score an inning later. Jyawook would go on to single in another run in the seventh for the Aces to round out the game's scoring.

Jyawook finished the day 2-for-4 with a walk.

UE will be back in action on Tuesday as they welcome in Indiana to Charles H. Braun Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.

NOTES: UE has lost three consecutive games for the first time since the South Alabama series on opening weekend … Eric McKibban saw his 12-game hitting streak snapped, but with two walks, he extended his on-base streak to 15 … This weekend marked the first-ever contests between UE and both Central Connecticut and Liberty … Since 1978, the Aces are 2-10 versus schools from the state of Virginia.
