Game Notes
The Aces (11-11) took two out of three this past weekend at Eastern Kentucky, and both games this week will offer a chance for UE to exact vengeance after dropping a pair of heartbreakers to both schools two weeks ago.
After racing out to an early lead, the Aces dropped an 11-10 slugfest at SIUE on March 16. UE tied a school record with six home runs on the night, but it would be all for naught as the Cougars scored a pair of runs in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to climb out of a 6-2 hole.
A day prior to that offensive explosion, the Aces and Hoosiers locked horns for a 10-inning battle at Braun Stadium. UE grabbed a 5-1 lead after four innings, but a five-run seventh put IU in the driver's seat before Jonathan Ramon's clutch eighth-inning triple tied things up. A Scotty Bradley single in the 10
th, however, spelled doom for the Aces as IU went on to pick up the 7-6 victory.
On Tuesday, the Aces will turn to Austin Allinger on the mound for the SIUE contest. The freshman right-hander will be looking to bounce back from this past Saturday's start at EKU, where he surrendered three runs in the opening frame before stepping off the mound. He enters the contest with a 2-1 record and a 6.56 earned run average over 23.1 innings of work.
Brandon Gomer, will make his return to starting in Wednesday's contest. Another freshman, Gomer returned from an injury in a relief appearance on Saturday, and he owns a 9.30 ERA over five appearances and 20.1 innings.
The Aces line-up, which boasts of 23 home runs already this season, will be key in both contests. The team has already slugged more homers this year than it has in any season since 2011. Led by Ramon's six homers, the Aces are hitting .281 as a team and averaging better than seven runs per game.
SIUE and IU enter the week with 4-16 and 12-10 records, respectively.
First pitch on Tuesday is slated for 6 p.m., and Wednesday's game at IU will begin at 6:05 p.m. Eastern time.
NOTES: UE homered 26 times during the 2011 season … Jonathan Ramon's six home runs are the most in a season since Kevin Kaczmarski hit six in 2013 … Since 1978, the Aces are 16-19 against Indiana and 275-205 versus schools that hail from the state of Indiana … UE is 16-7 against SIUE … The Aces are 220-197 overall against Illinois schools.
