BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – As the game entered the bottom of the fifth inning on Wednesday night, the University of Evansville baseball team had already scored the most runs against Indiana in school history, but the 15-0 scoreline proved for naught as the game was called just three outs away from being official at Bart Kaufman Field.
The Aces (12-11) scored five runs in the first, third and fifth innings on Wednesday as Aces pitcher Brandon Gomer held the host Hoosiers (12-11) to just one hit through four innings.
UE wasted little time in getting started as Stewart Nelson and Eric McKibban led off the game with back-to-back singles. A Boomer Synek single plated the game's opening run, and Jonathan Ramon grounded out to double the advantage. A throwing error later in the frame resulted in another pair before Nate Reeder, the ninth UE hitter of the frame, singled in the final score of the opening stanza.
In the third, Jeff Christen doubled home a pair of runs, and Nelson added another with a sacrifice fly before Trey Hair homered to right field to make it 10-0.
As the game moved into the fifth, the Aces mounted a two-out rally, beginning with a Hair single to score the first of the frame. Ramon would plate another with a bases-loaded walk, and Josh Jyawook brought home three more with a double to left center.
Eric McKibban led all UE hitters with a 3-for-3 showing with three scores, and both Nelson and Hair finished with two hits in the contest. However, their stats from the contest will not count in the season's overall statistics.
Meanwhile, Gomer was nearly unhittable on the mound in his first start since an injury earlier this month. The freshman right-hander did not allow a hit through the first three innings of the game, and he went into the rain delay with a pair of strikeouts.
The Aces will return to action on Friday as the team will play host to Florida Gulf Coast at Charles H. Braun Stadium.
