WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – In a match that went down to the wire, the University of Evansville women's tennis team picked up a 5-4 victory over Grand Valley State on Monday evening.
"In the end, it was some fantastic individual efforts that saved the day," head coach Jayson Wiseman said. "Doreen did a great job of closing her match in straight sets. Kennedy, Katie and Marine showed tremendous heart and determination to come away with three set wins in a clutch situation."
Evansville picked up four singles victories to clinch the win. At #2 singles, Marine Darzyan defeated Allie Sweeney, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (8). Katie Delgado got the job done in the #3 spot. She took the win over Aimee Moccia, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (3).
The win was clinched thanks to victories in the fifth and sixth spots. Doreen Crasta defeated Livia Christman, 6-0, 6-4 while Kennedy Craig took the win at #6 singles, defeating Sam Schrepferman, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (2).
GVSU took wins at top singles and at No. 4. Abby Perkins defeated Marina Moreno, 6-2, 6-0 at #1 while Andjela Brguljan fell to Madison Ballard, 7-5, 6-1.
The Lakers opened the day with the win in doubles, taking two out of three flights. Evansville won the third flight as Moreno and Brguljan defeated Christman and Perkins, 9-8 (2). At top doubles, Darzyan and Crasta fell to Moccia and Rachel Sumner, 8-2, while #2 doubles saw Delgado and Craig fall to Ballard and Sweeney, 9-8 (3).
