EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A week after earning an impressive series win over Wichita State, the University of Evansville softball team looks for another winning weekend as they head to Normal, Ill. to face Illinois State.
Saturday's doubleheader begins the action at noon with a final game taking place at the same time on Sunday. Evansville improved its season mark to 16-19 with its 2-1 weekend against the Shockers. The Aces are also 4-8 in league play.
For the first time since 2013, the Purple Aces won a conference series as they took two out of three games against Wichita State. The last series win came on April 20-21, 2013 when Evansville took two out of three on the road at Missouri State. Another interesting fact that came out of the weekend is that this is the first time since UE joined the MVC in 1994 that both the softball and baseball teams have won their regular season series against WSU in the same season.
Evansville first baseman Morgan Lambert had what was potentially the biggest hit of the season for the Purple Aces. With Evansville trailing Wichita State by a 4-0 score with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning in Saturday's second game of the doubleheader, Lambert belted a home run off of the centerfield wall to tie the game up as Evansville eventually came back to win the game and the series.
Freshman Morgan Florey has had a great season for UE, posting a 1.86 ERA in her 120.2 innings of work. She made two huge strides in the program record books in the weekend series against Wichita State. She sits with 156 strikeouts, which officially moved her into the top five in the Aces single-season record book. She sits in fifth place. The record holder is Katie Markle, who had 216 in 2005. Florey also notched her fourth save of the season on Saturday, which tied her for the single-season mark as Mattie Ross also had four in 1996.
Illinois State (12-24, 4-6 MVC) is coming off of a 2-0 weekend that saw them take a pair of games against Indiana State last weekend. They earned 8-0 and 8-5 wins over the Sycamores. The series this weekend's marks the end of a 9-game homestand for the Redbirds.
Jordan de los Reyes is the top offensive weapon for ISU, hitting .378 on the season. Her 20 runs, 42 hits, nine doubles, seven home runs and 28 RBIs are all tops on the squad. Riley Strandgard is next for the Redbirds, checking in at .355.
