EVANSVILLE – In a game where the Purple Aces were put on the back foot early, Korbin Williams delivered a knockout punch in the bottom of the ninth as the sophomore belted a walk-off home run to seal a 7-6 win for the University of Evansville baseball team over visiting Bradley at Charles H. Braun Stadium on Friday night.
"It was a big time hit from a big time player and that was great to see," UE head coach Wes Carroll said. "He didn't miss that fastball, and it was great match-up for him. For him to connect there and put the ball off the scoreboard to get us a Missouri Valley Conference win on a Friday night is just huge. I'm really proud of him tonight."
Williams, who also homered in the sixth inning to kick-start UE's comeback effort, has now left the park six times this season, and the Newburgh native finished the game with three runs batted in on the night to lead all hitters in the contest.
"The last time I hit a walk-off home run, I was 11 years old, but this is a little different," Williams said. "It's a great feeling to come out here on a Friday and help the team like that. These last four games have been a big momentum shift for us into the right direction, and hopefully we can keep it going."
It was an inauspicious start for the Aces (19-13, 3-1 MVC) after starter Patrick Schnieders gave up six runs over the opening five innings, but relievers Brian Jestice and Ryan Brady were excellent in his stead, combining to allow just one hit while striking out four.
"Our bullpen really gave us the chance tonight," Carroll said. "They came in and put up four goose eggs to really help our offense get a chance to get into their pen and work on some of their pitchers. Brian and Ryan both shut down a good offense, and I feel like they were just in sync tonight."
Brady picked up the win to move to 1-1 on the year, while Bradley's Eric Scheuermann was dealt the loss after allowing four hits in 2.1 innings of relief.
After falling behind 3-0 early on, the Aces put together a three-run fourth to draw things even. Williams grounded out to push the first run across, and Travis Tokarek singled home another pair, but the deadlock would last just mere moments as Spencer Gaa led off the ensuing frame with a solo blast to left to put the visitors from Peoria ahead once more. A two-run double from Ian Kristan pushed the lead back out to three runs before Schnieders induced a flyout and groundout to get out of the frame.
Gaa led the Braves (15-12, 1-2 MVC) on the night, going 3-for-5, but overall UE held the edge in hits 10-9.
Following Williams' first homer in the sixth, a Shain Showers bunt single loaded the bases to lead-off the bottom of the seventh, and Josh Jyawook wouldn't waste the opportunity, singling home a pair to tie up the contest.
From there, the Aces would strand a two runners in both the seventh and the eighth, but it wouldn't come back to haunt them as Williams hopped on the second pitch he saw in the ninth, blasting it off the scoreboard in left center to send his teammates hurdling over the rails in the UE dugout to celebrate with the slugger at home plate.
The Aces, who have now won four consecutive games, will return to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest at Braun Stadium.
NOTES: Friday marked the second time this season that Korbin Williams has homered twice in a game … Previously, he hit a pair at UT Martin … UE has hit 34 homers this season, which is the most for any Aces squad since 2010, which was the last season played with the old NCAA bat standards … Since 1978, UE is 50-37 against Bradley … The Aces are also 222-197 against schools that hail from the state of Illinois over that time span, including 5-1 this season … Last year, the Braves picked up the first two wins of the series in Peoria before the Aces left town with a 10-0 seven-inning win on the final day… In 2014, the last time BU paid a visit to Evansville, the Aces won all three games by a combined 22-8 score.
