BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A five-run fourth inning would prove the difference on Tuesday evening as the University of Evansville baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision to Western Kentucky at Nick Denes Field.
"We just didn't play good enough baseball to win tonight," UE head coach Wes Carroll said. "We didn't execute the way we needed to, and those little things make a difference. We have a great line-up from top to bottom, and I think we have a good balance. We just have to do better in these close games of cashing in runs when we have those opportunities."
The decisive frame, which saw the Hilltoppers (17-11) beat out four infield singles, helped the hosts grab a 5-1 lead, and the team would tack on another score in the sixth to end the Aces' four-game winning streak.
With the loss, UE will enter conference play later this week with a 15-12 record.
The Aces actually drew first blood in the contest when Jeff Christen doubled in Korbin Williams in the top half of the fourth, but 10 Hilltopper hitters would walk to the plate in the bottom half of the frame to open up the game.
Williams finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk and four other players enjoyed two-hit outings as the Aces out-hit the hosts 13-12.
Allinger, who was pegged with the loss, was on the hook for all five runs (three earned), allowing nine hits and striking out two. The freshman is now 3-2 on the season.
In the fifth, Boomer Synek reclaimed a score with a single to plate Trey Hair, and Jonathan Ramon followed up later in the frame with a solo blast to left for his team-leading seventh home run of the season.
Sacrifice flies from Shain Showers and Josh Jyawook rounded out the Aces scoring as UE finished the game with 12 runners left on base.
Meanwhile, Kaleb Duckworth led the way for the WKU line-up, ending 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in, and Cody Coll picked up the win on the mound, improving to 1-2 after allowing three runs in the fifth. Jackson Sowell struck out a pair in the ninth to pick up his sixth save.
UE will be back in action on Friday when Wichita State will pay a visit to Charles H. Braun Stadium to open up Missouri Valley Conference play.
