Evansville set to host UE Invitational

10/12/2018 7:14:00 PM

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - With a strong season competing on the road behind them, the University of Evansville men's and women's cross country teams close out the regular season by hosting the UE Invitational on Saturday morning at Angel Mounds State Park.

Through four meets in the regular season, Evansville has earned top five finishes in each competition on both the men's and women's side with the Aces' women coming into Saturday's home meet as winners of three-straight meets.

Saturday's meet gets underway at 10 a.m. with the women's 5k race, followed by the men's 8k. Held at Angel Mounds State Park, the Aces will run on a course they are familiar with and has been home to numerous championship events in recent years. A season ago, Angel Mounds played host to the 2017 NCAA DII National Championships and has also hosted the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference Championships. In 2021, Angel Mounds will host the NCAA DI Great Lakes Regional.

Evansville's women's team looks to continue its success this weekend after winning the Fast Cats Classic in Owensboro, Ky. last Saturday. Taking three of the top five spots in the race, the Aces finished in first as a team with a 36-point margin between UE and second-place Bellarmine. The team victory was the third-straight for Evansville after earning wins at the Austin Peay Cross Country Festival and UAH Chargers open in previous weeks. Last season, the Aces finished in second among NCAA DI competition at the UE Invitational as UE was bested by Austin Peay, who returns to Angel Mounds this season.

On the men's side, the Aces have earned top five finishes in each of their four outings this season, including a second-place finish at the Austin Peay Cross Country Festival. Last week at the Fast Cats Classic, UE finished fifth in the 16-team field, led by junior Stanley Chepchieng, who improved upon his 8k PR by 21 seconds with a sixth-place finish in a time of 27:11. In all, four Aces set PRs at the Fast Cats Classic including career-bests from sophomore Phil Dzienciol and freshmen Jack Rauch and Alton Hoops. At the UE Invitational last season, Evansville finished second among NCAA DI teams, closing the day just behind Austin Peay.

The UE Invitational represents the last opportunity for the Aces to prepare in competition before Evansville travels to the 2018 MVC Championships in Peoria, Ill. on October 27.
