IOWA CITY, Iowa - Cold rain and sleet held back the start of the doubleheader, then Iowa, along with some ill-timed errors dampened the University of Evansville baseball team, as they dropped game one of the double dip to the Hawkeyes, 10-3 , at Banks Field in Iowa City Saturday afternoon.
Freshman right hander Jace Burke got the start for the Purple Aces (5-9) and struggled from the start. Iowa's Robert Neustrom tagged Burke for a 2-run home run in the opening frame. Matt Hoeg followed that up with an RBI sacrifice fly, putting UE in a 3-0 hole after one.
After a clean second inning, the Hawkeyes (9-6) put one on with out in the third, chasing Burke from the game. Senior reliever Hunter Porterfield came in to put out the fire, but instead Iowa would come up with three straight hits, including Matt Hoeg's RBI single making it 4-0 Hawkeyes. Justin Jenkins would then deliver a bunt, Porterfield's throw to first was off line, allowing another Iowa run to tally. Then, Porterfield bounced a pitch in front of the plate, bringing in the third and final run of the inning, putting Iowa up 6-0.
At the plate, Evansville's bats couldn't break through early on Iowa ace Nick Allgeyer. Shut out through the first three frames, the Aces would finally get on the board. Senior outfielder Dalton Horstmeier's one-out double was followed by sophomore shortstop Craig Shepherd's clutch two out RBI single. Horstmeier would tally the icebreaker.
However, that was the only damage the Aces would do against Allgeyer, and Iowa would keep swinging. Porterfield would give way to David Ellis, who came out of the bullpen and proceeded to walk the bases full. Then, Tanner Wetrich tagged the sophomore righty for a hot shot past freshman first baseman Tanner Craig, bringing in a pair of runs. Later in the inning, Justin Jenkins would deliver an RBI single to cap another three run frame for Iowa. The Hawkeyes would build a 10-1 lead.
Up 10-1 after six innings, Allgeyer turning things over to the Iowa bullpen and Evansville showed signs of life in the 7th. It began with a one out double to left from senior pinch hitter Stewart Nelson. Freshman Pete Vaccaro came off the bench to send a single to center, putting runners on the corners. Sophomore infielder Troy Beilsmith took advantage of the set table with an RBI to left, scoring Nelson from third. Then, a fielding error by the second baseman on a chopper by freshman Tanner Craig allowed Vaccaro to score, cutting the deficit to seven runs.
However, that was it for Evansville, as they fell in game one of the twinbill, 10-3 the final.
