Game Notes
The Purple Aces, after dropping five of their first six contests, have bounced back to sweep Western Illinois this past weekend, then beat Bowling Green State 3-2 in twelve innings Wednesday evening, pushing their record back up to .500.
This weekend they'll face an even hotter squad, as the Eagles have won ten of their first 12 games, reeling off four wins in a row, including back-to-back victories over Florida A&M Tuesday and Wednesday.
The last time these two teams met was in 2016, when the Aces swept FGCU at Braun Stadium in Evansville.
Evansville opens the series Friday, sending out staff ace junior Austin Allinger to the hill. The right hander is coming off his best start of the season, shutting out Western Illinois over 6 1/3 innings, piling up eight strikeouts in the process. Allinger will be opposed by Mario Leon (3.71 ERA, 1-1). On Saturday, the Aces start junior left hander Alex Weigand, who also had his best start of 2018 the least time out, holding the Leathernecks to just four hits, while striking out six across 6 innings of shutout work. FCGU will counter with Josh Dye, who leads the Eagles in ERA (1.50 ERA, 2-0). Sunday will see sophomore right hander David Ellis take the hill for UE. Ellis looked sharp, while not picking up the win against WIU, going four innings allowing just one run on four hits in a no-decision. He'll be opposed by Evan Lumbert (2.35 ERA, 2-0).
