Aces open season with strong finishes at Walt Crawford Open

CHARLESTON, Ill. - Opening their season on Friday evening, the University of Evansville men's and women's cross country teams posted a pair of impressive finishes at the Walt Crawford Open in Charleston, Ill..

Evansville's men's team earned a podium finish, coming in third in the seven-team field, while the Purple Aces' women's team grabbed a fourth-place finish in the eight-team field.

Sophomore Anna Lowry paced the Aces' women's team, posting a new personal best with an eighth-place finish in a time of 18:41.9. Lowry finished just 30 seconds behind Northwestern's Kelly O'Brien who won the meet. Finishing second among Aces runners was junior Hannah Welsh in 15th, while senior Sienna Crews (20:16.4) and freshman Katelyn Singh (20:30.3) crossed the line in 27th and 28th, respectively.

In 30th was freshman Haylee Harmeyer who finished in a time of 20:44.7 with fellow freshmen Haley Dean (21:12.0) and Savanna Mills (21:13.6) just behind in 33rd and 34th, respectively. A trio of Aces finished one after another in 37th, 38th, and 39th as senior Ashton Bosler (21:25.4), freshman Emma Boebinger (21:28.5), and sophomore Lauren Meyer (21:29.6) finished the race in a pack. Also finishing in the top 50 for Evansville were sophomore Izzy Dawson (22:10.1), freshman Ah'tahja Hooper (22:21.9), senior Hayley Elliot (23:49.3), and freshman Claire Dardeen (24:01.0). Sophomore Kylie Hasenour completed the 5k race in a time of 29:03.5, while freshman Zaya Lumumba finished in 58th in a time of 36:03.3.

On the men's side, junior Stanley Chepchieng led the way for the Aces, earning a 15th-place finish, completing the 8k race in 28:14.2. Less than 15 seconds behind Chepchieng, senior Jordan Carpenter crossed the finish line in 28:29.1, grabbing a 24th-place finish. In third among Evansville runners, was sophomore Kalen Ochs who finished in 28th in a time of 28:55.3.

Just behind Ochs for Evansville were sophomore Dawson Hood (29:14.4) and junior Ricky Hendrix (29:24.0) who completed the race in 29th and 30th, respectively. Following the trio of Ochs, Hood, and Hendrix was freshmen Carson Kline who captured a 35th-place finish in a time of 29:59.9. In 39th and 40th was another group of Aces as freshman Kaleb Slagle finished 39th in a time of 30:41.9, while sophomore Timmy Miller (31:02.2) crossed the finish line in 40th.

Three more underclassmen competed on the evening for UE in freshman Jack Rauch (31:45.0) finishing 44th, sophomore Tyler Frields-Reifsteck, who finished in 47th, and sophomore Grant Mangan finished the night in 52nd in a time of 35:08.7.

In all, three Aces finished in the top 15 of their respective competitions, including a PR for Anna Lowry.

Among the seven men's teams at the Walt Crawford Open, the University of Illinois won the event, defeating host EIU by just two points. Northwestern captured the women's title at the open after earning the top three individual finishers in the women's 5k.

The UAH Chargers Open in Huntsville, Ala. awaits the Aces next as Evansville travels south to compete before getting a weekend away from action on September 14-16.
