Aces in the Summer: Baseball student-athletes showing well in collegiate summer leagues

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - After a season that saw the Aces finish as the No. 4 seed in the MVC Tournament, many members of the University of Evansville baseball team have continued playing in collegiate summer leagues.

Troy Beilsmith (Eau Claire Express, Northwoods League): Beilsmith has impressed with the Eau Claire Express of the Northwoods League. The senior is hitting .329 with nine extra base hits, a pair of home runs, and 28 RBI (second-best on the team). In recognition of his strong play, Beilsmith was named a Northwoods League All-Star. Through 19 games, Beilsmith has helped Eau Claire to the top of the Great Plains East division standings.

Danny Borgstrom (Joliet Generals, Midwest Collegiate League): Borgstrom and his Joliet Generals have enjoyed success this season. The Generals currently sit fifth in the league standings with a 12-13 record.

Tanner Craig (Mankato Moondogs, Northwoods League): Nearing the .300 mark at the plate this summer, Tanner Craig heads into the final stretch of the season hitting .291 with seven doubles, a triple, and five home runs. Craig has driven in 26 RBI, tying for the team high in the category. Craig has helped lead the Moondogs to a strong summer, amassing a 12-7 record, including a 7-3 mark in their last 10 games.

AJ Fritz (Terre Haute Rex, Prospect League): The Rex and Fritz have been busy this summer, playing 46 games, and compiling a 25-21 record. The Rex currently sit third in the east division of the prospect league, six-and-a-half games out of the division lead.

Ben Komonosky (Regina Red Sox, Western Canadian Baseball League): Hitting a pair of homers and driving in eight runs, Komonosky has helped power the Regina Red Sox to an impressive campaign. Regina currently leads the eastern division with a 30-13 record, two-and-a-half games ahead of second-place Swift Current 57s. Komonosky is third on the team in innings played behind the plate, seeing 43 innings of action for the Red Sox.

Michael Parks (Springfield Sliders, Prospect League): Parks has shown his stuff this season for the Sliders. Parks has the lowest ERA of all starting pitchers for the Sliders with a 2.57 ERA in six starts and seven total appearances. In 35 innings, Parks has struck-out 38 batters while walking just seven and earning one victory on the mound. Opposing batters have struggled against Parks, hitting just .183 and recording just six extra base hits and one home run.

Garrett Presko (Saint Joseph Mustangs, MINK League): The Saint Joseph Mustangs are another team that has seen success this season with an Ace on their roster. Presko and the Mustangs lead the North division of the MINK League with a 30-8 record, including a 9-1 mark in their last 10 games. The Mustangs own a six-and-a-half game advantage over second-place Chillicothe for the division lead.

Eric Roberts (Richmond Jazz, Great Lakes Collegiate Summer League): Another Aces' pitcher who has found his stride this summer is Eric Roberts. Roberts has recorded a 3-2 record with a 2.72 ERA in 10 appearances and six starts. Pitching 36 innings for the Jazz, Roberts has thrown 30 strike-outs and walked just 14 batters.

Craig Shepherd (Rochester Honkers, Northwoods League): What a season it has been for Craig Shepherd with the Rochester Honkers. Shepherd sits second on the team with a .339 batting average. In 14 games, Shepherd has three doubles, two home runs, and eight RBI. The Honkers have a 28-27 record and are third in the Great Plains West division.

Sam Steimel (Dubois County Bombers, Ohio Valley League): Not far from UE, Sam Steimel ahas seen significant action for the Dubois County Bombers. On the mound, Steimel has pitched 34.1 innings with a 4.72 ERA and 24 strike-outs. The Bombers hold a 20-18 record and are four-and-a-half game sout of the east division lead.

Easton Stewart (Dubois County Bombers, Ohio Valley League): Along with teammate Sam Steimel, Easton Stewart has also spent his summer with the Bombers. Stewart is second on the team in batting average, hitting .344 with five doubles and 17 RBI. Stewart has also shown some speed on the base path with eight stolen bases.

Jake Vesecky (Wilson Sandlot, Arizona Collegiate Wood Bat League): Playing out west this summer, Vesecky has spent time playing with Wilson Sandlot of the Arizona Collegiate Wood Bat League. Vesecky has recorded 31 at-bats with four runs scored, a home run, and three RBI. Wilson Sandlot has been a powerhouse this summer, amassing a 20-3-1 record and out-scoring its opponents by nearly 100 runs.
