PARIS - DeAndre Williams was the leading scorer once again as the University of Evansville men's basketball team earned a 77-64 victory over the AK Training Camp squad on Wednesday evening.
Â
"We are very excited to complete this trip with a 3-0 record, but our guys are really getting connected and that is what this trip is about," UE head coach Walter McCarty said. "This was the best team we have seen over here; they really came after us and made a game out of it."
Â
"Our program wants to thank all three teams for the opportunity to play; it was a great experience for us."
Â
Williams scored 17 points while Jawaun Newton had an excellent outing, posting 14. K.J. Riley had 14 tallies while Noah Frederking finished in double figures for the second-consecutive game, posting ten.Â
Â
Neither team was able to muster up a lead of more than a possession in the early-going. AK Training Camp took a few leads in the opening 20 minutes, but it was Jawaun Newton starring early for the Aces, scoring nine out of 11 points during a second-quarter span as Evansville went up 22-20.
Â
AK continued to fight back and took a 27-25 advantage with 5:25 remaining in the first half. That is when the Aces changed the full complexion of the game. Over the final moments, Evansville outscored AK by a 15-7 margin to take a 40-34 lead into the break.
Â
Early in the third, AK made it a 43-39 game, but that is as close as they would get. DeAndre Williams hit an and-one to give Evansville a 53-43 edge, its first double digit lead of the game. From there, the Aces would cruise to a 77-64 triumph.
Â
Evansville's opponent was AK Training Camp. Players on the team were from a few different professional teams in the region.
Â
UE junior Sam Cunliffe did not play in Wednesday's game. He took a hard foul in Monday's game in Belgium and had some back pain. Coach McCarty explained that the team did not want to risk anything and did not play him in today's game.
