MURRAY, Ky. - Giulia Cardona recorded 21 kills as the University of Evansville volleyball team fell by a 3-0 final at Murray State on Saturday.
Cardona hit .314 in an efficient outing. Defensively, it was Kora Ruff and Alondra Vazquez leading the way with eight digs. Ruff added 21 assists.
Set 1 - MSU 25, UE 22
After scoring the first three points of the match, Murray State extended the lead to 7-3. Evansville fought back to knot the score at 8-8 on a Cardona kill. The Racers used a 6-2 run to retake the lead at 14-10.
The Purple Aces did not give up and fought all the way back to tie it at 21-21, but MSU fended off the challenge and used a late run to take the win.Â
Set 2 - MSU 25, UE 20
Katie Tsironis picked up a kill that gave UE an early 3-2 edge. Three in a row by the Racers put them in front before the Aces used another Cardona kill to things up at 11-11.
Another MSU run put them in front at 18-14 but Evansville had one more run. Consecutive Cardona kills got the Aces back within one at 20-19 before the Racers finished with another run to take a 25-20 decision to take a 2-0 lead.
Set 3 - MSU 25, UE 19
Looking to finish with the sweep, Murray State opened on a 10-1 run in game three. Hannah Watkins picked up a kill that got UE as close as 15-12, but the Racers capped off the night with the 25-19 victory to win by a 3-0 final.
