EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville freshman women's soccer player Ashlyn Koutsos has been selected to participate on the Greece U-19 National Team in the upcoming UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship qualification. She will report to the team on April 1, with Euro qualification play beginning on April 3 against Denmark.
Koutsos, a freshman midfielder at UE from Cumming, Georgia who holds Greek status through her parents, recently participated in two exhibition matches for the Greek U-19 team in February. Koutsos and the U-19 Greeks split a pair of friendly matches with Northern Ireland. It was her play in the two matches which led to the invitation to participate in Euro qualification, as she was a member of the Starting XI in the first exhibition (a 1-0 Greek loss), and was a key spark off the bench in Greece's 3-1 victory in the second friendly.
The UEFA Women's U-19 Championship qualification will be the second round of qualification, with the final round set for later this summer. Greece is in Group A1 in the Championship qualification round, as they are grouped with Denmark, Spain, and Slovenia. Qualification play begins April 3 against Denmark, and will continue on April 6 against Spain and April 9 against Slovenia. Spain is the reigning U-19 European Champions.
"This is an incredible experience for Ashlyn," said UE head coach Chris Pfau. "She has worked extremely hard from the first day of pre-season at UE, and this has been a dream of hers for a long time. It is great to see her hard work pay off!
"To play for your National team and in the Euro's is one of the biggest environments that you can play in. We will all be watching and cheering for Ashlyn and the Greek National Team."
Koutsos played in all 17 matches for UE in the midfield this past year.
