Aces drop weekend opener at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Hinsley Everett led the University of Evansville volleyball team once again with 10 kills in a 3-0 setback at Belmont on Friday evening.

Everett was the lone Purple Aces player to complete the match with double figure kills. She added six digs. Ryan Scheu had six kills while McKenzie Laubach wrapped up the night with five. Ainoah Cruz recorded a match-high 19 digs while Lexi Owen tallied 16 assists. Brooke Gilleland paced the Bruins with 11 kills.
 
Game One – Belmont 25, UE 16
Hinsley Everett picked up a kill to make it a 2-2 game while the Bruins reeled off four in a row to take a 6-2 advantage. Chloe Cline's first kill of the night cut the deficit to 8-6 before Belmont doubled the lead to four at 14-10. The turning point followed as the Bruins scored three in a row to take their largest lead of seven points and would pull away to take the set by a score of 25-16.
 
Game 2 – Belmont 25, UE 12
After jumping out to a 4-1 lead, Belmont put forth a dominant effort to take a commanding 2-0 match lead on the strength of a 25-12 decision in the second frame. The Bruins early rally saw them go up by tallies of 11-3 and 18-5 before taking the win.
 
Game 3 – Belmont 25, UE 13
In the early stages of the third set, the Aces had the momentum. McKenzie Laubach and Hinsley Everett had kills to put UE in front at 2-0. Laubach's second kill of the set capped a 3-1 start. Belmont countered to go up 6-4 but Everett's second kill of the frame made it a 1-point game once again. From there it was all Bruins. A 7-1 run gave them a 13-6 lead and they pulled away to clinch the match with a 25-13 win.
 
Tomorrow, UE looks for the weekend split with a 5 p.m. match at Murray State.
