The Purple Aces capped off their five game homestand with their first midweek win of the season over SEMO. In a back-and-forth game UE prevailed in the bottom of the 8th as first baseman Cal McGinnis hit a single up the middle that hit the second base bag to score the go-ahead 7-6 run.
With the win on Tuesday UE is back above .500 in one-run games after struggling with close games early in the season. Evansville has won five one-run games against Missouri, Central Arkansas, Murray State, Valparaiso, and SEMO. The Aces have won two one-run games back-to-back at German American Bank Field.
Evansville will look to remain in the top half of the Missouri Valley Conference standings over the weekend as the program heads to the Windy City to take on the UIC Flames. The Aces took the series last year at The Braun 2-1 and won a MVC Tournament game over UIC as well. The Flames have struggled in the first third of the season with a 6-21 overall record and a 2-4 conference record. UIC is led by outfielder Luke Nowak with a .374 average and 40 hits. UE has faced Nowak before as he transferred to the Flames from East Carolina who Evansville bested in the 2024 NCAA Regional.
Graduate catcher/designated hitter Matt Flaherty has hit a home run for the Aces in back-to-back games heading into Friday's action at UIC. Flaherty hit his first career walk-off home run against the Beacons to give UE the series win on Sunday. He also added a long ball in the seventh inning against SEMO to put Evansville back in front for the eventual 7-6 win. Prior to his time with the Aces, Flaherty was second on the Bellarmine Knights in home runs with 6 in the 2024 season.Â
