RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Evansville baseball team dropped game three of the series at Cal Baptist on Sunday afternoon by a score of 9-1
Eight Aces had a hit, highlighted by Mason McCue (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara), who drove in the lone Evansville run with a pinch-hit single in the ninth inning.
Kevin Reed (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) took the loss for Evansville, while Bryan Peck got the win for CBU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Evansville threatened in the first inning, with Spike Magill (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) drawing a leadoff walk to extend his on-base streak to 19 games and Reid Haire (Hudson, N.C./Charlotte) ripping a base hit into left center field to put runners on second and third with two outs. However, a strikeout ended the threat.
In the home half of the first, the Lancers jumped in front, using three hits to score two runs.
Evansville again put two runners on base in the second inning on singles by Aaron Nehls (Evansville, Ind./North) and Simon Schulz (Evansville, Ind./Memorial), but the runners were left stranded once again.
CBU added two more runs in the bottom of the second, but could have put up a much bigger number if it wasn't for Nehls. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Aces' left fielder went back to the wall on a deep fly ball and reached over the wall to rob the Lancers of a grand slam.
Owen Byberg (Barrie, Ontario/Fronteer CC) took over on the mound for the Aces in the third inning and steadied the ship, putting up zeroes in the third and fourth innings to keep the score at 4-0. However, in the fifth, the Lancers used three hits and an Evansville error to score three runs and extend their lead to seven.
In the top of the seventh, the Aces put together another threat, loading the bases with one out on a pair of singles and a walk. However, the Aces were thwarted once again, as the Lancers escaped the jam unscathed.
Two-way player Wyatt Pennington (Avon, Ind./Avon) took the mound in the bottom of the seventh for his second pitching appearance of the year and struck out two to work a scoreless frame. However, CBU used a two-run home run in the eighth to push their lead to nine.
Evansville avoided the shutout in the top of the ninth, with Benji Kautto (Toronto, Ontario/W. Technical Commercial) picking up a pinch-hit single before McCue delivered his own pinch-hit single to drive in Kautto. However, that was where the game would end, as the Lancers took a 9-1 win.
