TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The University of Evansville baseball team dropped an extra innings heartbreaker on Friday night, falling to Indiana State by a score of 4-3.
With the game tied at two heading into extra innings, Evansville grabbed a 3-2 lead on a sac fly by Simon Schulz (Evansville, Ind./Memorial) in the top of the 10
th. However, the Sycamores pushed across two runs in the bottom of the 10
th to walk it off.
Max Hansmann (Elmhurst, Ill./York) was magnificent on the mound for Evansville, firing seven innings of one-run ball to lower his season ERA to 3.61. Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) led the Aces offensively, going 2-for-2 with two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Indiana State got on the board first, using a pair of two-out hits to take a 1-0 lead.
Hansmann buckled down from there, striking out a pair in the second before stranding a runner at third in both the third and fourth innings.
In the fifth, Hansmann posted another zero with help from Spike Magill (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista), who threw out his second attempted base stealer of the night.
Evansville broke through at the plate in the sixth, with Longmeier delivering a 2-out double to drive in a pair of runs and give the Aces the lead.
Hansmann found himself in a bit of a jam in the seventh inning, with the Sycamores putting two on with two outs. However, on his 111
th pitch of the day, Hansmann induced a fly out to put a bow on his start.
Chris McCormack (Naperville, Ill./Iowa Central CC) took over on the mound in the eighth and allowed a run on a sac fly, but Magill ended the inning with his third caught stealing of the night to keep the game tied. In the bottom of the ninth, the Sycamores put runners on second and third with two outs. McCormack came through, however, coming up with a big strikeout to force extra innings.
In the top of the 10
th, Aaron Nehls (Evansville, Ind./North) was called on to pinch hit and delivered a leadoff single before advancing to second on an erro by the center fielder. After a fly out advanced Nehls to third, Schulz came through with a sac fly to right field to give the Aces the lead.
The Sycamores would not go away, though, scoring the tying bottom of the 10
th with an HBP before plating the winning with a sac fly.
