EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville baseball team dropped the rubber match of the series against UIC on Sunday afternoon, falling by a score of 11-5 at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium.
The Flames led the game 4-3 through five innings, but a 3-run sixth and a 4-run seventh helped UIC break things open.
Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo./Northeast CC) had a 2-hit day and reached base four times to lead the Aces offensively, while Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) reached base four times.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Kenton Deverman (Dardenne Prairie, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) got the start for Evansville and worked out of a jam in the first, stranding the bases loaded with a strikeout.
Ryan Seddon (Joliet, Ill/St. Laurence) helped the Aces threaten in the bottom of the second with a 2-out double, but was left stranded.
UIC grabbed the lead in the top of the third, using a 2-run home run and a pair of doubles to jump in front 3-0.
Evansville got two runs back in the fourth, taking advantage of five free passes to cut the deficit to one.
Both teams scored a run in the fifth, with Taubert lacing a double off the left field wall to plate a run for the Aces.
The Flames broke things open in the sixth, however, scoring twice in the inning and four times in the seventh to take an 11-3 lead.
Drew Fieger (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Lincoln Trail CC) steadied the ship for Evansville on the mound, striking out four in two strong innings. The Aces got a pair of runs back in the eighth, highlighted by an RBI triple from Reagan Reeder (Ramsey, Minn./Illinois), but the Flames would hold on to secure an 11-5 win to take the series.
