EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Freshman Wren Jones had her top performance of the young season in Tuesday's home opener that saw the University of Evansville volleyball team fall to Southeast Missouri State by a final of 3-1 inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
 
Jones recorded 14 kills while hitting a solid .257. Ryan Scheu and Makenzie Miller tallied eight kills apiece. Kendall Agler led the way with 18 digs while Carsyn Kelley added 35 assists. SEMO was led by Lucy Arndt's 15 kills with Paige Smith posting 11.
 
Set 1 – SEMO 25, UE 17
 
After the Redhawks scored three of the opening four points, the Aces tied it right up at 3-3. Back-to-back kills by Sabrina Ripple saw UE takes its first lead at 12-11. That is when SEMO turned the tables taking a 16-13 lead. Evansville rallied back with an ace from Lexi Owen that cut the deficit to 16-15. Up 17-16, the Redhawks regained control as they outscored the Aces by an 8-1 margin to take the first set.
 
Set 2 – SEMO 25, UE 19
 
Evansville took the early 2-1 lead while SEMO fought back to go up 9-5. Two kills pushed their lead to 13-7 and forced an Aces time out. The stoppage helped the Aces as an Angelica Gonzalez kill cut the Redhawk lead in half to three points at 14-11. Unfortunately, SEMO made another rally scoring seven in a row to go up 21-11. UE never gave up, getting within five points in the final stages before the Redhawks clinched the set.
 
Set 3 – UE 25, SEMO 17
 
Makenzie Miller and Wren Jones helped Evansville jump out to a 5-0 lead. Two solo blocks by Miller along with a pair of kills by Jones forced a Redhawk time out. The Aces continued to roll going up by as many as nine points at 13-4 on yet another solo block from Miller. McKenzie Laubach added two kills during the stretch.
 
SEMO closed within five points (15-10) before kills from Laubach and Jones put the Aces in front at 19-12. From there, UE forced a fourth set with Miller picking up the clinching kill.
 
Set 4 – SEMO 25, UE 17
 
Trailing 3-1 out of the gate, UE tied the game at 5-5 thanks to kills from Jones and Lyla Fisher along with a Brooke Herdes ace. Over the ensuing sequence, the Redhawks regained control going up 13-8 but it was a kill from Ryan Scheu that saw Evansville claw its way back within three at 17-14. SEMO had the answer, posting the next five to take their largest lead of the frame at 22-14. They would go on to clinch the match on the strength of a 25-17 decision.
 
Next up for the Aces is a trip to the Miami/Best Western Invitational this weekend where they are set to face Miami Ohio, Purdue Fort Wayne, and Kansas City.
