UT Martin defeats UE volleyball in midweek contest

MARTIN, Tenn. – Freshmen Lyla Fisher and Wren Jones combined for 30 kills on Tuesday to lead the University of Evansville volleyball team in a 3-1 loss at UT Martin.
 
Fisher recorded 16 kills while Jones added 14 kills and 12 digs. McKenzie Laubach and Ryan Scheu recorded seven kills apiece. Carsyn Kelley led the Purple Aces with 36 assists to go along with 10 digs. Kendall Agler led all players with 23 digs. Sophie Diouf and Carly Mueller paced the Skyhawks with 15 kills each.
 
Set 1 – UE 25, UT Martin 20
UT Martin opened the night scoring the opening three points before leading by a score of 5-1. Scheu and Fisher picked up kills to bring UE within a point at 8-6 before an error by UTM tied the score at 10-10. After the Skyhawks regained an 11-10 lead, UE turned the tables. A kill from Jones gave UE a 12-11 edge while Laubach added a kill to help the Aces take a 16-12 lead.
 
The Skyhawks stormed back to tie the set at 19-19, but Evansville overcame the rally to take the win. UE finished the set on a 6-1 run with Jones completing the set with four consecutive kills.
 
Set 2 – UT Martin 25, UE 21
With the score knotted at 5-5, UT Martin scored four in a row to go up 9-5. Their advantage reached five points at 17-12 when the Aces began to stage a comeback. Helped by a Jones kill and an ace from Kelley, the Aces cut the deficit to 18-17. The Skyhawks quickly answered, scoring the next three tallies before tying the match with a 25-21 win.
 
Set 3 – UT Martin 25, UE 23
In the early moments it was the Aces who had the momentum. Laubach registered an early kill to give her squad a 3-0 edge while Fisher picked up consecutive kills to make it a 9-3 game. Wren Jones capped the run with an ace. The lead for UE reached as many as seven when another Fisher kill made it a 14-7 game.
 
That is when the Skyhawks answered with four consecutive tallies before making it a 17-16 game. Fisher recorded a kill while Laubach added an ace to give UE a 19-16 advantage, however, UTM continued to rally scoring the next five points to go up 21-19. Evansville fought back to tie the set at 21-21 and the teams battled to a 23-23 tie. The Skyhawks picked up the final two points to finish the set and take a 2-1 lead.
 
Set 4 – UT Martin 25, UE 19
The Skyhawks jumped out to a 6-3 lead and never gave that advantage up as they would clinch the match. Evansville rallied on multiple occasions as another Laubach ace made it a 12-11 game. After UTM regained an 18-13 edge, the Aces fought back within two (19-17) on a Jones kill before the Skyhawks completed the match with a 25-19 decision.
