EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Sophomore Savannah Gogel had a career match with 14 kills to lift the University of Evansville volleyball team to a 3-2 win over USI on Saturday inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
 
Gogel hit .379 in the winning effort while picking up a solo block and six block assists. Ryan Scheu matched her career mark with 15 kills in the contest while Wren Jones finished with 13. Kendall Agler added 20 digs while Jones and Lexi Owen had 11 apiece. Carsyn Kelley recorded a career-best 49 assists to go along with eight digs. Carley Wright paced USI with 16 kills.
 
Set 1 – UE 25, USI 18
Helped by a pair of service aces, the Screaming Eagles jumped out to a 4-1 advantage. Savannah Gogel helped UE tie the game at 4-4 with a solo block and kill. USI responded by scoring the next three, however, the Aces came back once again to take their first lead at 9-8 on a McKenzie Laubach block. Carsyn Kelley and Gogel combined on a block that put UE up by a pair at 15-13 before the advantage reached four at 17-13.
 
After USI got within two, Gogel had a block while Laubach and Kelley assisted on a block to double the lead. Jones recorded two more kills as the Aces pulled away to take the set by a 25-18 final.
 
Set 2 – USI 25, UE 22
Just as they did in the first set, USI had the early momentum to open the second. Three consecutive aces by Audrey Small helped them take an 8-1 lead. Gogel jump started the Aces with a kill and two blocks to make it an 8-5 game. USI went back up by six on a UE error while the Aces would battle back within three (14-11) helped by a Ryan Scheu kill.
 
Evansville continued its rally with a Laubach ace getting her team within one before another Gogel kill gave UE its first lead at 17-16. Wren Jones' first kill of the set made it a 20-18 contest. USI battled back with a 4-1 rally to jump back in front at 22-21 before winning by a score of 25-22.
 
Set 3 – USI 25, UE 19
Two kills by Lyla Fisher set the Aces up with a 3-1 edge before USI tied the set at 4-4. The Screaming Eagles continued their run taking a 7-5 lead while extending it to 12-6. A pair of Scheu kills kept Evansville in the mix scoring six in a row to tie things up at 12-12. With the score knotted at 14-14, USI scored the next four and would take the set by a 25-19 tally to take a 2-1 match lead.
 
Set 4 – UE 25, USI 20
An early kill from Scheu gave the Aces a 3-1 lead while USI jumped in front with a 5-0 run to go up 6-3. Savannah Gogel's 10^th kill of the afternoon tied things back up at 8-8 before four consecutive service aces from Brooke Herdes put Evansville on top at 12-8. Things continued to go the Aces way when a block by Kelley and Laubach extended the lead to 15-9.
 
Kills by Scheu, Laubach, and Herdes continued to add to the lead with Evansville going up 18-10. The Screaming Eagles stormed back to get within two, but a Kendall Agler ace helped UE overcome the stretch to force a fifth set.
 
Set 5 – UE 15, USI 13
After falling in a 0-3 hole, Evansville scored the next three with Jones and Laubach picking up a block. USI scored the next two before UE came back to tie the game at 6-6 on a Jones kill. Later, it was Fisher give the Aces their first lead at 10-9 with her fifth kill of the match. The teams continued to battle down the stretch with UE finishing off the victory.
