Biography

2014:  Drafted by the Colorado Rockies with the eighth overall pick of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, making him the third player in program history dra­­­fted in the first round and the second-highest draftee in history behind only Andy Benes, who was the No. 1 pick in the 1988 draft…Semifinalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and Gregg Olson Award…Baseball America First Team All-American…Perfect Game First Team All-American…ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-American…Louisville Slugger All-America Third Team selection…National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-America Third Team…Only player in school history to earn five All-American honors…Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year…All-MVC First Team…Finished the season with a 10-2 record and 1.90 ERA in 14 starts, spanning 99.2 innings…Ranked second nationally with 11.56 strikeouts per nine innings, third with a 10.67 strikeout-to-walk ratio and sixth in the nation with 128 total strikeouts…Limited opponents to a .214 batting average, allowing just 13 extra-base hits and no home runs…His 128 strikeouts rank second on Evansville’s single-season record list behind only Andy Benes (188 – 1988)…Accumulated 282 strikeouts over his three-year career to rank fourth on UE’s all-time list and ranks second on the program’s career ERA list with a 3.55 mark…Posted double-digit strikeout totals six times, including in five-straight outings from 3/28 – 4/25…Struck out a career-high 15 batters in back-to-back outings at Charlotte (4/4) and vs. Wichita State (4/11)…Allowed more than two earned runs in just two of his 14 starts on the season…Finished 6-0 with a 1.34 ERA and a .211 opposing batting average in his seven MVC starts, which included 68 strikeouts against just five walks…Named to Baseball America’s Preseason All-America Second Team…Entered the season ranked #9 on the College Top 100 Draft Prospects by Baseball America after a standout season in the Cape Cod Collegiate Baseball League, where he led the league in strikeouts and was named a Cape League All-Star as a member of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.

2013: Made 14 starts on the mound…Tossed three complete games and finished the year with a  4-8 record and 4.34 ERA…Ranked second on the team with 84 strikeouts and 93.1 innings of work…Issued just 26 walks on the season and opposing hitters posted a .296 average against him…Threw UE’s only complete-game shutout, earning the victory in a seven-inning contest where he struck out nine and allowed just four hits at Bradley (3/29)…Posted two other complete-game efforts, going the distance at Southern Illinois (4/5) and vs. Bradley in the MVC Tournament (5/22)…Struck out a season-high 10 batters against Milwaukee (3/3)…Allowed just 16 extra-base hits on the season…Allowed no more than four earned runs in a game in his first eight starts.

2012: All-Missouri Valley Conference Honorable Mention…Started 14 games, going 4-5 with a 4.55 ERA…Led the team with 70 strikeouts and issued just 22 walks in 91.0 innings of work…Tossed two complete games, with both of them being shutouts…Was named the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Region Player of the Week, MVC Pitcher of the Week and a CollegeBaseball360 Primetime Performer for his performance at Missouri State (5/13)…Held the Bears to just one hit in a complete-game shutout, striking out 11 and taking a no-hit bid into the ninth inning…Tossed his other complete-game shutout at Creighton (4/1), giving up just three hits and recording six strikeouts in a 1-0 win…Tallied nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings in a no decision against Western Michigan (3/18)…Did not factor into the decision in his last start of the year in the MVC Tournament, when he went 8.1 innings and fanned seven Illinois State players (5/24).

Background: Chosen in the 35th round by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft…Lettered three times in baseball and four times with in golf at Thomas Jefferson High School…Named an all-state player in 2011 while notching all-district honors in his junior and senior campaigns…Set the state record with 145 strikeouts in 2011…As a senior, posted an 8-2 record with a 1.39 ERA while walking just 17 over the course of 65 innings…Finished his career in high school with a .477 BA, 1.96 ERA and 208 strikeouts.
