For Love of the Game:
Up until this weekend, our team had taken on the motto “We love the game, but the game’s just not lovin’ us back”. So if you came to read a play-by-play, you came to the wrong place! Since our last blog we’ve played what feels like 86 innings going on 300. We certainly didn’t lighten our load any by taking pretty much every other game into extra innings. And even though such close competition is what every athlete dreams of, it starts to wear you out when you come up on the losing side of every well-fought battle. So, if you missed the games and are just dying to know how they played out, read the box scores—we don’t feel like rehashing those memories!
We do have to mention the game that we played against IU last Wednesday. First and foremost, the victory clenched Coach Lewis’s 500th career win (Get it GIRRRRL). The celebration was even sweeter since the extra-inning win came against the big state rival. Former UE softball player Ashley Hobbs, who transferred to IU’s team last year, made her first appearance in the Ville since she left. Shout out to Hobbs: We miss you!! And we were all glad to see you, even if you were wearing an IU jersey!
The IU game also served as our Colon Cancer Awareness game, which turned out to be a great success. To the disappointment of all fans in attendance, Jen’s mom was unable to make it down to the game after all. Even though she blames it on the weak excuse of having to work, we all know that she didn’t want to show anybody up with her wicked breaking ball, and thought it would be better for the team morale to swallow her pride and stay at home. Despite the empty promise of a dirty first pitch, the promotion was a hit, and it’s safe to say that all the fans walked away with a better awareness of the seriousness of colon cancer. REMINDER: Colon cancer is the 2nd deadliest cancer and kills more per year than aids and breast cancer combined! Early detection is the best cure, so GET A COLONOSCOPY TODAY!
Looking ahead, we certainly haven’t paved out a smooth road to the MVC tournament, but we’re determined to get there. We took a step in the right direction on Saturday when we won our first conference series with a sweep over Bradley. It’s great to get on the board and ditch our “0-for” record. But we’re not planning on stopping any time soon. This week we travel to Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes before traveling to Terre Haute to take on the Indiana State Sycamores.
Outside the Lines
Fox 7 News Crew, you asked for a definition of softball shenanigans, and we are here to define it! We’ll try to avoid making this lengthy, but we’ve got funny stories rolling in left and right these days.
As you may have read, our trip to Western Kentucky early last week was pretty uneventful due to a mid-game torrential downpour. Most people would think that traveling for 2 hours to only play 2 innings would be a waste of time. However, a dull moment is hard to find on the UE softball bus, and this trip proved to be no exception. Our bus driver, Michael, encouraged our boisterous mood while we waited on the bus for the game to be officially called off. The WKU coach was reluctant to cancel the game completely, assuring us that the storm of a century would “blow over” any minute. Any blind man could see that there was no stopping this weather system, and none of us were particularly thrilled by thought of being swept away by a tornado at any given moment. But rules are rules and we weren’t allowed to leave until the WKU made it official. Inspired by our history of bus hiijinks, Michael turned the waiting game into an actual game by rolling the bus forward 3 feet every time lightening struck. By the time the WKU coach made the official call, we were already a good 12 feet out of the parking lot!
The silliness continued on the way home, when the back of the bus hosted a head-to-head competition that required strength, endurance, and pure concentration. The competitors: Kristen Shirk, Kelci Alsip, and us. The game: Hold your hand above your head for 20 minutes straight. The objective: Whoever had the lowest and weakest pulse in their arm after the 20 minutes wins the title, the honor, and the pride. Needless to say, it was an intense battle. Blood, sweat and tears were shed, and we saw what true champions are made of. After a debatable official reading of pulses, Kristen Shirk was declared Champion. Word on the street is she’s been practicing for a 40-minute showdown with the next brave contender.
Before our series against UNI, we hosted a burial precession for our 0-10 conference record, which we fondly named “Owenton” (get it?). A representative from each class was chosen as the Pall Bearer, a job that entailed a face of grave seriousness, and a kazoo rendition of the death march. A symbolic rock was buried, and a tombstone was mounted by the fence in remembrance of Owen. Each player took turns saying their final words to our record, most of which included swearing and spitting. Even though he may not have died right away, after our weekend sweep, we are happy to say that Owenton is dead and gone, may he rest in peace.
Other moments worthy of mention include our Dessert in the Dirt event, which may or may not be responsible for the team’s probable weight gain of 20 pounds. (Although none of it can be contributed to Shirk’s dessert, since it was frozen in an act of vicious sabotage. Suspects are still pending, but Maggie Little’s name has been thrown around an awful lot). The always-fashionable dads spent an entire Saturday with purple and orange hair, eyebrows, and mustaches to show off their team spirit and dedication. Then on Sunday the moms followed suit by sporting pigtails and other embarrassing hairstyles in an effort to pump us up. Also, Jen Stahlhut’s pet duck, Ronnie (or Ronster Monster as we like to call him), is growing into a real duck, and is just days away from getting his real feathers. Even our strength coach Joe has been caught on camera getting caught up in his undeniable cuteness.
Now we’re just taking it easy, enjoying our Easter. This blog has again turned into a novel, but we deliver only the best to our readers. We hope you all have a happy holiday, and like always, you stay hot, Evansville.
Favorite Easter Candy: Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs. Hands down.

Update:
Since we’ve found ourselves sitting around in Evansville with no softball games to be played, we figured we give you a quick update.
Nothing says softball season like blizzard warnings and winter advisories in what is soon to be April. Apparently, the weathermen in Kansas are making up for the entire winter by dumping 12 inches of snow directly on the campus of Wichita State, which means no conference series for us this weekend. While we were spared the ungodly bus ride to Wichita that lasts somewhere between 10 hours and infinity, we’re still pretty bummed that we won’t be playing this weekend, especially because the three-game series will most likely not be made up.
So our weekend will be spent in good old Evansville. We’re scheduled to play an inter-squad scrimmage on Sunday, which will help us prepare for our state rivalry game against IU on Tuesday. The IU game also happens to be our “Colon Cancer Awareness” game. Jen’s mom, a colon cancer survivor, is scheduled to throw out the first pitch, and we’re expecting her to bring nothing short of a 65mph heater, so be sure not to miss out on that!
**OUR SHORT PSA ON COLON CANCER:
Colon cancer is the 2nd deadliest cancer, behind lung cancer. It kills more people worldwide than breast cancer and aids combined, yet it receives nearly 75% less funding. The most common symptom is NO symptom, which leads to late discovery and prevented care. If caught early, it is COMPLETELY treatable!! So if you or your loved one is over 50, or has a family history of GI or colon disease, GET A COLONOSCOPY TODAY!!
We’re changing up the format of this blog since there hasn’t been much time for softball “tomfoolery” (which is our new synonym for ‘shenanigans’, since it has been brought to our attention that on average, we use the word 987, 324 times a day, give or take). So instead, in a grand gesture to reach out to our reading fan club (which we’re convinced consists of just our moms), here’s a rare insight into our lives and personalities.

For Love of the Game
Ladies and gentlemen, please try not to get too rowdy tonight in your celebration of our two long overdue wins! It’s great to finally be on a two-game streak that doesn’t involve the word ‘losing’. We pulled out two wins thanks to a solid defensive performance and a handful of powerful bombs (Big congrats to freshman Maggie Little for belting her first collegiate home run!). And we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon—as Kylie Wagner would say, “Call us butter, ‘cause we’re on a roll!”. We won’t go that far, but in all seriousness, it’s great to finally feel like our team is coming together, especially since our recent conference tribulations.
Our past weekend at Drake ended in three tough-luck losses in games that were a few hits away from going our way. A loss is always hard to swallow, but it leaves an even worse taste in your mouth when you have to walk away knowing that the tables could have just as easily been turned in your favor.
Tuesday we had a chance for redemption in the rivalry games vs. #18 SIU Carbondale. Both games saw head-to-head competition, but we unfortunately ended up on the losing side of both. Even though it was hard to keep our heads up after our 8th conference loss, we couldn’t hang them too low either. We hung with the Salukis for 15 innings, and if they were ranked #18, we were certainly right there at #19.
The good news is, despite our record, we are capable of beating every team that we have met. It’s only a matter of time before everything starts clicking and we’ll be right back on top. We’re back to conference play this weekend at Wichita State, and we’re determined to keep the streak alive and come home on the winning side of a sweep!
Outside the Lines
Since our last blog entry, several noteworthy moments have occurred, and it’s in our job description to fill you in on the details of every last shenanigan (That’s right Doug Kufner and the Fox 7 news crew, we said shenanigans).
Our bus trip to Des Moines was seemingly uneventful. Eight hours of driving through nothing but backroads and cornfields really seems to tire you out. We did manage to pass the time by playing close to a million rounds of “The Dirt Game”, which is a “get to know your friends” type of board game that borders somewhere between extremely entertaining and slightly inappropriate! We also marked “visit the world’s largest truck stop” off of everyone’s bucket list. You heard correctly, we have seen the 8th wonder of the world. Located in The Middle of Nowhere, Iowa, there is a four-story truck stop complete with about 10 fast food restaurants, showers, and a movie theatre! Needless to say, that’s something that we’re going to be telling our grandchildren!
We would like to go on the record to clarify a misconception about our team’s newfound ability to jack balls out of the park. Some of the readers no doubt accredit our work ethic in the weight room, or perhaps you assume that all of our off-season reps are to thank for our effortless ability to send a pitch over the wall. However, credit needs to be given to where the credit is due, and that credit goes to Peg Boardman, who has inspired us all to perfect our signature ‘homerun trot’. In last week’s practice, we each took turns showcasing our ridiculous moves, and the sudden increase in our home run output is clearly a direct result of us wanting to share our trots with all of you. Good work, Peg.
Another shout-out goes to Jen’s mom, Tari McKee, who has sent the gift of music to Evansville by sending the entire team purple kazoos. Even though there are apparently rules prohibiting artificial noisemakers in the dugout, we make up for lost time by playing them extra before the games. The team has rehearsed a fine rendition of “The Sound of Music” soundtrack that is downright Grammy-worthy. And keep your ears open at the next home game, because with this kind of musical environment, we are throwing down some mad beats in the dugout, or as we like to refer to it as, “The Beat Laboratory”.
Today’s outfielders were in a particularly rambunctious mood during the second game as they devised a plan to replace the first letter of everybody’s name with the letter “Y”. For 7 straight innings, you would hear a “Let’s go Yocky!” or a “You’re way ahead of her Yen!”, followed by bursts of laughter. The best part of the entire scheme was that only a few people caught on, which provided the outfielders two full hours of entertainment. In fact, they are probably still laughing about it now!
That’s all for the recap our ridiculousness. Until next time, stay hot Yevansville!

Thanks for the vote of confidence girls. Maybe I can take my lawnchair to the baseball stands to watch the games, better view with less exposure. I still think T-Ball is in her near future.
I bet I can guess who came up with the "Y" idea in the outfield ---- The initials are KP! By the way Lissa, don't give up your day job, singing is not in your future ---- DEADDDDDDDD.
Good luck and keep working hard!

For Love of the Game:
This weekend wasn't exactly the big breakthrough we were looking for. No doubt about it, Creighton is always a tough competitor and a hard team to beat, but simply put, we just aren't performing like we know how to. In case you missed the games, there's not a whole lot of recapping for us to do. Despite the loss on our record, the first game proved to be a solid defensive effort that was only missing a few key hits. And despite the scores, the other two games weren't nearly as bad as they may seem on paper. However, at the end of a day a 1-0 loss holds the same value as a 10-2 blowout. As a team we know that we are much better than we're allowing our record to reflect, and it's only a matter of time before things start falling into place. Being swept by Creighton certainly isn't the best way to start off conference play, but the important thing to remember is that there's only room for improvements and we need to hit the ground running!
There were a few bright spots throughout the weekend. Jen Stahlhut looks to be back to her old form, managing a hit in each game off of the seemingly un-hittable 2-time MVC Pitcher of the Year Tara Oltman. Ashleigh Rahming and Krista both made appearances in the lineup after both were sidelined for several games due to PCL injuries. Our offense has suffered the effects of a plague of injuries, so it's comforting to see that we are finally starting to heal.
Big props to all of the fans that rode out the dreary weather on Saturday! We had much appreciated support from our fan club of Ryan's, (Ryan Schmitt, Ryan Berg, and Ryan Thomas/Stahlhut) who insist on referring to themselves as "R-cubed". Their rendition of "Sweet Caroline" during a long break in action was no doubt a crowd pleaser! Several softball alumni also dropped by Cooper Stadium to show their support throughout the weekend. A few of the girls headed over to Nick's Pizza after Sunday's game for a mini "reunion" with Lauren Heldt and Laura Rather and family. (There's your shout-out Rather! Tell your dad that the next time he comes down we'll have 100 wings waiting for him-50 now and 50 later!)
Up next for UE softball is a double-header on Wednesday. We'll be facing off against Tennessee-Martin on what is predicted to be a gorgeous day! So come on out and enjoy the sunshine, and hopefully a couple of wins!
Outside the Lines:
Spring break was fun while it lasted, but now it’s back to the grindstone with our regular schedules full of classes and studying. The spring semester is quickly winding down, so we are all a little under the gun with assignments, tests, and projects. Registration for fall classes begins this week, which always brings about excitement as well as stress, particularly for the coaches. Most people may not realize that since UE is such a small school, classes are only offered at certain times, and it’s a lot of work for Coach Lewis and Peg to have to schedule practices around our class schedules.
With all the focus on school, we haven’t had too much time for entertainment. But we’ve somehow managed to squeeze in some moments of fun here and there! Some of us have become bona fide rockstars, thanks to the video game Rock Band. We’re usually pretty sarcastic people, but we’re dead serious when we say that we may or may not be thinking about going on tour. To continue the Step Brothers quoting craze, our band has often been called the ‘songbirds of our generation’. Since we haven’t been on the road, there haven’t been any opportunities for our usual bus shenanigans, but I’m sure that we will come back from our weekend trip to Drake with several accounts of our usual travel nonsense!
Also, if you haven’t heard the news, the Lady Aces Basketball team totally kicked butt in the MVC tournament and is going to ‘the Big Dance’! ( We like to believe it was all thanks to our radio shout out during the semi-final game!) Congratulations to them from the UE softball team! We’ll all be cheering you on along the way!!
And since we know you’ve all been dying to see them, we’re working on getting some pictures up on this blog soon! But until then, stay hot Evansville!

For Love of the Game
Sorry for the delayed post —not much has been happening on the softball front here in Evansville. This past weekend we were scheduled to play in Memphis, Tennessee, but the games were cancelled due to inclement weather. We can speak for the team when we say we didn’t find the news particularly heartbreaking since softball never seems quite as fun when you’re playing in 35-degree weather! Although it was disappointing that “Walking in Memphis” turned into “running in Carson Center”, our free weekend gave us the chance to get a few more practices in and really focus on making improvements.
The team was looking good going into our tournament in Tampa, Florida, and it seemed like the only thing standing between us and a few wins was the 15 hour bus ride. As it turns out, however, we apparently had a few more obstacles facing us. Long story short, it just wasn’t a good weekend on the beach! We lost our first 4 games in a hard-to-watch fashion. Between defensive blunders, hitting miscues, and pitching woes, it was an Evansville Softball remix of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Our team morale seemed to suffer a bit, which is hard to prevent after enduring four straight losses. After Saturday’s games we regrouped as a team, talked about the positives and the negatives, and reassessed what we needed to do to fix the problem.
We came back to the ball fields early Sunday morning to face Lehigh in the consolation game, determined to stop the bleeding and leave Tampa with at least one win. We were focused and confident the entire game, turning out what could be one of our best defensive performances. The infield showed us their A-game by sucking up grounders like Hoover vacuums! Big shout out to Stahly for coming through big time with her game-winning hit! (Even though all of the fans know the credit goes to her sister Michelle and her “rally bra”!!)
It would be easy to walk away from this weekend with nothing but shattered confidence and a nasty sunburn. However, our team is confident in our abilities and we know that this preseason is only preparing us better for conference play. We know that we are not in a slump by any means we just have not been winning any games lately! But it’s hard to learn if you never make mistakes, so we should be well ahead of the learning curve when our conference starts this Wednesday with our home opener against SIU! See you all there!!
Outside the Lines
To say the least, our spring break fun won’t be airing on MTV anytime soon, but we made the most of spending half of the week on a deserted campus! With Memphis being cancelled, we enjoyed a peaceful 5 days with nothing to do except practice and relax. Some of the team fought off the boredom with a hair-coloring party. (Lissa wins the “bold” award with her newly added ‘Cinnaberry’ highlights). Since the campus was closed and there was no meal service, we were treated to team meals every day. Dinner at Jillian’s ended in a session of “rumpus time” as we ran wild with our free game cards! The team cleaned house in the ticket department and we all walked away with some pretty sweet prizes. (including one special little feather pen named Victoria!).
The trip to Florida was no doubt filled with shenanigans. We were once again victorious in pulling off a prank against Coach Lewis—a task that is slowly becoming easier every day! While walking along the beach, we stumbled upon a shell that looked shockingly similar to a bird skull. Needless to say Coach took the bait and screamed loud enough to scare the flock of seagulls at the other end of the beach! In other beach news, we did get to spend some time walking the shores, collecting rare shells, or soaking up some rays in our sliding shorts and sports bras! (Hey, when you spend the whole winter in Indiana, you’re desperate for some color!) Speaking of beaches, big thanks to the Vincelett’s for treating us to a delicious lunch along the ocean! And a big shout out to all of fans that made the trip down to Florida to cheer us on! It’s always good to see that wave of purple in the stands!
Thanks to Shanna Rahming for showing some love for the blog! We’ll keep you posted, you keep the comments coming!! Until then, stay hot Evansville.

For Love of the Game
Last weekend was a fairly successful first outing at the Georgia State Invitational. The first day proved to be a challenge, as we went head to head with some tough competition in (#16) Mizzou and Georgia State. Even though we walked away with two tough losses, for the first time playing outdoors as a team since the fall, we had little to hang our heads about. On Sunday, we headed back to the ball fields with a lot of confidence and enthusiasm, with the taste of our first win on the tips of our tongues. We learned from Saturday’s mistakes, smoothed out some rough patches, and walked away with two run-rule wins against Virginia Tech, who made an appearance in the Women’s College World Series last season. Big shout out to senior Lissa Fehlman, who’s weekend performance (and not to mention grand-slam!) earned her the title of MVC Player of the Week and Scholar Athlete of the Week. (Although the award clearly didn’t take gracefulness into account, seeing as she successfully face-planted into her position after she tripped over her own feet!)
This weekend we traveled to Starkville, Mississippi to play in the Mississippi State Invitational. We certainly took our lumps over the 3-day tournament. The good news is that we finished the weekend on a high note with an extra-innings win over Rutgers. Due to the technicalities of the international tiebreaker rule, I (Jen) was forced to be the runner that started on second base. Luckily for us, I am deceptively speedy, and my impeccable base-running skills (and a little help from a perfect bunt by Kelci Alsip and a base-hit by Krista) were the perfect combination to get the winning run across! However, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t praying that I wouldn’t be forced to slide! =) We definitely have our work cut out for us during practice this week. Hopefully we will be able to address the problems, make the appropriate changes, and come out this weekend ready to win!
Outside the Lines
The season is only 2 weekends underway, and it’s already been packed with one-liners, inside jokes, and lots of laughing. The team has successfully memorized the entire script of “Step Brothers”, and has developed a borderline obsession with quoting it in every day conversation. Coach Lewis at times seems under appreciative of our quick-witted humor. But no worries, we devote a lot of our bus time scheming ways to make her admit that we are “funny people”, and it seems to be sinking in as of late. Last Sunday, Krista and Jamie Lindauer celebrated their 21st birthday in a limited fashion since we spent the entire day on a bus back to Evansville. However, we did manage to make a toast on the bus with some delicious Welch’s Sparkling Grape Juice! Speaking of celebrations Friday was full of holiday festivities, as we celebrated national “Chocolate Mint Day” on the bus, complete with decorative signs and frozen Thin Mints...YUM =) We also stepped up to the challenge of turning a short-staffed Subway into a sandwich making assembly line! Kristen Shirk was a pro as she manned the vegetable station, while Peg proved to have a promising future in wrapping the finished subs! Hopefully we will be able to upload some pictures of our fun, thanks in large part to Coach’s new camera addiction. Coach has mastered the “paparazzi” technique, and is never more than a camera-click away from capturing the best of our moments off the field! Until then, stay hot Evansville!
