Evan Berkey will serve as UE’s volunteer assistant coach in 2023. Berkey joined the UE staff directly before the start of the 2023 season, and will remain on staff until departing to play for the Missoula PaddleHeads in the first week in May.
Berkey earned second team all-Missouri Valley Conference honors at Evansville in 2022 in his graduate season of college baseball. Berkey hit .273 with seven doubles, a triple, 10 home runs and 44 RBI in his lone season as a Purple Ace. Berkey started the year at third base, but made the move to second base on April 1, and he helped UE rank tenth in the country with 54 double plays turned. Berkey had 14 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI games, as he helped Evansville finish second in the MVC standings with a 32-24 overall record and 14-6 conference mark.
Berkey came to Evansville after playing four years at Cal State-Bakersfield, where he earned second team All-Big West honors as a senior in 2021. Berkey hit .324 with four home runs and 18 RBI in his final season at Bakersfield, and was a career .271 hitter in 151 career games as both an infielder and outfielder for the Roadrunners
Berkey will report to Missoula in early May and play second base for the PaddleHeads. He played this past summer in the MLB Draft League, and led all shortstops with a .339 average.
