Ryan Sowers will begin his first season as an assistant coach at Evansville this season. Sowers will serve as the team's volunteer assistant pitching coach this spring, while also directing UE's community service efforts and assisting with camps and UE's annual "hit-a-thon" fundraiser. He will also help coordinate UE's scouting reports.
Sowers comes to UE from Covington High School in Indiana, where he served as pitching coach last season. While coaching at his alma mater, Sowers helped the Trojans to a sectional title in 2007.
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Sowers excelled on the mound at both Parkland College and Charleston Southern University from 2003 through 2006. Pitching for current UE baseball coach David Seifert for two years at Parkland College, Sowers crafted a 14-2 overall record on the mound and helped the Cobras to a fourth-place finish in the 2003 NJCAA World Series as a freshman. He was also named Parkland's Most Valuable Pitcher in 2004 as a sophomore.
Sowers then took his skills on the mound to the Division I level in 2005, pitching two seasons at Charleston Southern University in the Big South Conference. Overall, Sowers won 12 games in just two seasons at Charleston Southern, and was named the Buccaneers' Most Valuable Pitcher as a senior in 2006.
Sowers shined in three sports at Covington High School in Indiana, as he was a four-year starter in baseball, basketball and soccer for the Trojans. On the diamond, Sowers was a three-time all-county selection and two-time team MVP. He also garnered three all-county honors on the basketball court and was rated as a top 100 basketball prospect in Indiana as a senior.
Sowers holds an Associate of Arts degree from Parkland College and a bachelor's degree in communications from Charleston Southern University, which he earned in 2006.
