Biography
At UE – J.R. Carbonell will begin his fifth and final year with the UE program this spring...Expected to help anchor the UE bullpen again this year, but could also make a spot start in UE’s rotation...An electric right-hander with good velocity and a great arsenal of pitches.
2008 – Anchored UE’s bullpen, recording a team-best four saves in 18 relief appearances...Went 1-3 with a 4.43 ERA in 22.1 innings of work...Led UE with 10.48 Ks/9 IP, as he struck out 26 men in 22.1 IP...Recorded 11 scoreless relief appearances...Gave up just three earned runs in his final 10 relief appearances while going 1-1 with two saves and 2.25 ERA after 4/1...Recorded his first career save with 1.2 scoreless innings vs. UNC-Asheville (3/8)...Also notched saves against Bradley (3/21), Murray State (4/9), and Indiana State (4/18)...Picked up the victory in UE’s 4-3 win over Chicago State (5/3)...Struck out a career-best four men in a career-long 3.0 innings of work vs. Central Michigan (3/16).
2007 – Missed the entire season after undergoing arm surgery related to summer baseball.
2006 – Ranked second on the pitching staff in appearances with 21...Posted a 2-2 record and 4.67 ERA in 17.1 IP...Recorded 14 scoreless relief appearances...Had a string of six-straight scoreless relief appearances from 3/14 to 3/31...Longest relief outing was 2.0 scoreless innings at Missouri State (3/31)...Picked up victories in relief against Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2/24) and Bowling Green (3/17).
2005 – Earned a medical redshirt after being shut down due to injury in early March...Appeared in five games as a pinch hitter...Did not appear on the mound.
Background – A two-sport standout at St. Charles East High School...Lettered three years in baseball and two in basketball...An all-conference and all-area baseball player...Also a member of the state’s all-tournament team...Team MVP...A career .360 hitter in high school, who also had an earned run average under 3.00...One-hit nationally-ranked Edwardsville in a state quarterfinal game...A mechanical engineering major...Chose UE because of the baseball program and the education.
