Biography

2010-11 – Chosen for MVC Scholar-Athlete Second Team...#6 in scoring (6.0) and #7 in rebounding (2.2) as a senior...#1 for UE in field goal percentage (63.9% on 85-for-133 shooting), but did not meet the FG minimums to qualify for MVC or national rankings... career numbers included 596 points and 354 rebounds...recipient of 2010 Carol Ann Kittinger Scholarship for dedication to UE basketball program....double-figure scorer in back-to-back games Jan. 18 and 23, something he had not done since freshman year... scored 11 points and hit two FTs in final seconds in 70-67 win over Bradley Jan. 23...tied his career high with 18 points Jan. 18 at So. Illinois...12-point game against Drake Jan. 12 was his highest total in an MVC game since 16 as a freshman vs. So. Illinois on Jan. 15, 2008... hit 4 of 6 shots and scored 8 points vs. North Carolina Dec. 8...had 6 points, 5 rebounds Dec. 5 at Air Force... produced 10 points and 6 rebounds Nov. 21 at Indiana.

2009-10 – Honorable Mention on MVC Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete Team for the second straight year...started in UE’s first seven games, then came off the bench in 20 of his remaining 22 games...scored a season-high 7 points and had a season-high 8 rebounds Nov. 21 vs. eventual national runnerup Butler... scored six points against Missouri State Dec. 29, Wichita State Feb. 9, Southern Illinois Feb. 13 and in MVC Tournament against Missouri State March 4...grabbed six rebounds against Creighton Jan. 3.

2008-09 – Second year as UE's starting center...reliable inside defender... sixth on the squad in scoring (4.8), fifth in rebounding (3.2)...honorable mention on MVC Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete Team...led UE in field goal percentage at .564...produced his first double-double with a career-high 17 points and a season-high 10 rebounds Dec. 2 in win over SIU-Edwardsville...also reached double figures with 10 points at Missouri State...pulled down seven rebounds against North Carolina A&T, Southern Illinois and Belmont...scored the key basket on an offensive rebound to beat Missouri State at home in overtime, 66-61, on Jan. 7.

2007-08 – MVC All-Freshman Team member...starting center in all 30 games...third leading rebounder and fifth leading scorer...led the Aces in field goal percentage at .500...scored a season-high 16 points Jan. 15 against Southern Illinois...just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds Nov. 24 at Ball State, where he scored the winning basket with 10 seconds to play...totaled 13 rebounds in opening game against Samford, and again on Dec. 15 against Hanover; at the time, the 13 rebounds were the most by a UE player since Ian Hanavan had 14 against Bradley in 2002-03.

2006-07 – Redshirted as a freshman by coach Steve Merfeld...played briefly against Kentucky Wesleyan in a Nov. 8 exhibition game, going scoreless in five minutes.

HIGH SCHOOL – Member of the Amsterdam Demon Astronauts and Akrides, two high level Dutch second league teams...led his team to the championship of The Netherlands Under-20 national tournament...chosen as a member of the All-Star Team at the 2005 Under-20 national tournament...averaged 19 points and 8 rebounds in Dutch second league, averaged 8 points and 9 rebounds in the European championships.

PERSONAL – Pieter van Tongeren...born August 27, 1987 in Amsterdam, Netherlands...son of Pieter and Ada van Tongeren...has a younger brother, Joris...attended Ichthus College High School...on target to graduate in May with a double major of visual communication design and communications.
