Gibson's Golden Goal Gives Good Guys The Win

9/27/2007 6:48:05 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Dan Gibson saw only about 20 minutes of action Thursday afternoon, but it was plenty to send home the University of Evansville soccer team with a 1-0 overtime victory against the Kangaroos of UMKC.

The sophomore from Godfrey, Illinois scored the golden goal late in the final overtime, less than four minutes prior to the match ending in a tie, to give the Aces a 5-4-0 record going into Sunday's match at Butler.  UMKC, ranked ninth this week in the NSCAA/adidas Midwest Region rankings, fell to 4-3-1.

Both squads produced opportunities during regulation and again early in the overtime period, but the winner finally came at 106:29 when Cory Elenio played a ball to Gibson 20 yards from goal. Gibson turned and took a touch into space, hitting a knuckling shot that UMKC goalkeeper Ken Cooper couldn't get a clean read on.  It was Gibson's second career goal, and his second against the Kangaroos.  His first collegiate goal came in last season's 2-1 victory over UMKC at Black Beauty Field.

"Part of our mission this year has been to win close matches against good opponents on the road, and we did that today," said Coach Mike Jacobs.  "Dan came off the bench and scored the winner, and a lot of our guys played well.  Alec Dufty played his best match of the year in goal, and Dustin Awe was a big part of our game in the midfield."

Evansville finished with 19 shots, four on goal, while UMKC got off a total of 14 shots, three of which were on goal that Dufty stopped to preserve his shutout.  Both Dufty and Cooper came up with diving stops to keep the match scoreless well into the second overtime.

Sunday's match at Butler ends the major part of the non-conference season for Evansville.  The Aces open Missouri Valley Conference play October 10 at home against Western Kentucky.
