NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Scoring goals has become easier for the University of Evansville men's soccer team the past couple years, but today the offense went into overdrive. UE beat Lipscomb 9-0, the most goals by Evansville since 1985.
"It was a clinical type of game for our guys," said Coach Mike Jacobs. "We took control and made everything work, and it came against a competitive Lipscomb team. They're solid. They qualified for their conference tournament. It was just that kind of game where it went our way. Hopefully it's the kind of game that will help us on down the road."
The nine goals were Evansville's most since the Aces beat Louisville 15-0 in 1985. Senior Cory Elenio scored three goals, the second most in school history.
Freshman Mike Luttrull opened the scoring at 7:57, and classmate Robby Lynch added the second goal at 25:29. That's when the offense went crazy. Stephen Minyono made it 3-0 less than one minute later, at 26:13. Then Elenio came up with what is believed to be the quickest hat trick in school history. He scored at 31:33, 35:09 and 44:39 to suddenly put the Aces up 6-0 at halftime. Kieran Purcell collected goal number seven at 57:42, Ryan Moll scored at 74:49 and Ben Harner wrapped up the wild day with a tally at 82:56.
Shots weren't lopsided. Evansville had a total of 24, with 14 on goal, while Lipscomb took 20 shots, six on goal. Alec Dufty and Corey Southers split the playing time equally for the Aces in goal. Lipscomb starter Jake Goergen played the first 76:50 and gave up eight goals while making four saves. Mark Williams played the final 13:10, allowing one goal and saving one shot.
The victory improved UE to 9-7-0 and dropped Lipscomb to 5-9-3. Wednesday's match was the final non-conference game for the Aces, who play Saturday at Missouri State in hopes of improving their 2-2 Missouri Valley Conference record.
