University of Evansville senior guard Rebekah Parker (Silver Lake, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) has been named this week’s Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Parker and the Purple Aces travel to in-state rival Butler on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in a game that can be heard live in the Tri-State area on 91.5 F.M.-WUEV.
Parker became just the second player in UE women’s basketball history to compile over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 250 assists in a career on Sunday, as she helped the Purple Aces complete a two-game homestand sweep of Tennessee Tech (72-56) and IUPUI (59-53). Parker scored 20 points against Tennessee Tech and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds Sunday against IUPUI, as she averaged 14.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in the two contests. Parker currently ranks second on the team in both scoring (13.4 ppg) and rebounding (6.1 rpg), while maintaining a 3.67 cumulative grade point average in Physical Education and Health at UE.
Parker and the Purple Aces (4-3 overall) will now try to extend their winning streak to three games on Thursday, as UE will travel to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to do battle with the red-hot Butler Bulldogs (6-1). The Bulldogs have won four games in a row and currently lead the Horizon League in scoring defense at 57.1 points per game. Junior center Lade Akande, a former Evansville recruit, currently paces the Butler attack with an average of 15.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. She has registered at least 19 points and nine rebounds in each of Butler’s last three contests, and has averaged 19.0 ppg and 8.5 rpg in her career against Evansville.
Butler leads the all-time series over UE, 18-15, although the Purple Aces did post an 80-68 victory over the Bulldogs last December at Roberts Stadium. Current senior Courtney Felke scored a then-career-high 26 points in the UE win last year on the strength of six three-point field goals. Felke currently leads UE in scoring at 13.6 points per game and ranks fourth nationally in three-point field goals per game at 3.4, although the Butler defense has given up an average of just 3.7 three-point field goals per contest this year.
