Soccer Aces Down Valpo, 4-0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- After losing to number four ranked Duke and North Carolina State by only one goal last week, the Valparaiso University Crusaders found a team they couldn't keep up with on Sunday.

The University of Evansville men's soccer team dominated the second half at UE's Black Beauty Field and beat the Crusaders 4-0.  It was the second win of the weekend for 2-2-0 Evansville, which beat Belmont on Friday, 4-1.  Valparaiso is now 1-3-0.

"We made a conscious effort to compact certain areas of the the field defensively, and I felt we did well with that today," said Coach Mike Jacobs.  "Our defensive players are also doing a better job of coaching each other on the field.  Valpo had success packing in their defense, but once we scored that first goal, it seemed to open things up for us."

Evansville broke the scoreless tie just two minutes into the second half when Ian McAuley took a serve from Kieran Purcell and beat one defender and goalkeeper Ryan Schwarz to the goal for his team-leading fourth goal of the year.

Freshman Mike Luttrull scored his first collegiate goal at 72:02 when he took a long pass from Dan Gibson and outran the Crusaders' defense to break open for a 10-yard blast past Schwarz.  Two minutes later, Dustin Awe scored his second goal of the year when he booted a loose ball 15 yards from the left side, and Stephan Minyono finished the second half dominance at 85:50 when he tucked a shot just inside the near post following passes from Tyler Hoek and Austin Schall.

Defensively, the Aces were just as strong.  They held Valparaiso to 10 shots, and only three on goal.  Evansville put 10 of its 24 shots on goal, and also led in corner kicks by a wide margin, 8-2.

The Aces play again Saturday against the University of Denver in the opening round of the UWGB Classic at Green Bay, Wis.
