EVANSVILLE, Ind.--The University of Evansville men's soccer team ended the pre-season with a decisive victory at home Sunday evening, beating Oakland City University 4-0 in front of a crowd in excess of 1,500 at Black Beauty Field.
The Aces open the regular season Friday afternoon against Oral Roberts in the opening round of the Memphis Classic.
"It was a great way to conclude our pre-season, and it was an awesome atmosphere for a college soccer match," said Head Coach Mike Jacobs. "We need to do a better job finishing our scoring chances, but I think we did a good job of putting the game away early and being consistent on both sides of the ball."
UE completely dominated Sunday's match, outshooting the Mighty Oaks 31-1. Kipp Erskine opened the scoring for the Aces at 24:54 when he took a pass from Dustin Awe and shot it past Oakland City goalkeeper Ken Klein. Then at 27:23, UE made it 2-0 when Mike Luttrull served up Awe, whose blast from six yards found the back of the net.
Evansville's first goal of the second half came at 54:20 when Ben Harner sent a hard shot past Klein following passes from Reggie Edu and Austin Eanes. Then at 71:02, UE closed out the scoring with a goal from Stephan Minyono, 15 yards away on the right side set up by assists from Harner and Tyler Hoek.
Twenty-one players saw action for the Aces. Goalkeeper Alec Dufty played the first 59:40 and Corey Southers saw action in the final 30:20.
