Aces Come Close Again In One-Goal Loss At Memphis

9/2/2007 9:20:32 PM

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Junior goalkeeper Alec Dufty of the University of Evansville scored a point and stopped a penalty kick, but he and his teammates couldn't contain Memphis midfielder Jared Britcher.

The result was a 2-1 victory by the Tigers here Sunday night in the final round of the Memphis Diadora Soccer Tournament.  The Aces also fell in the first round on Friday, 2-1 to Oral Roberts in UE's season opener.

Dufty was chosen for the all-tournament team along with teammate Dustin Awe, who scored Evansville's goal in Friday's match against Oral Roberts.

"I believe we are much improved from this point a year ago," said Coach Mike Jacobs, "but last year we were just trying to be competitive, and this year we expect to win matches against good teams like Oral Roberts and Memphis."

Britcher put Memphis up 1-0 at the 33:57 mark when he headed in Sean Goulding's corner kick.  Evansville's Ian McAuley tied the match at 49:30.  UE's scoring play began when Dufty booted a goal kick to midfield.  Freshman Robby Lynch then fed the ball to McAuley, who broke open to score his first goal of the year.  Both Dufty and Lynch were awarded assists.

Dufty then made a key save at 68:07, stopping a penalty kick by Memphis's Kevin Walsh.  But less than 90 seconds later, Britcher got around UE's defense and scored his second goal of the night to give the Tigers the game-winner.

Evansville plays again Friday in its home opener at Black Beauty Field against Belmont, at approximately 7:30.  The UE women begin Friday's doubleheader against Western Illinois at 5:00.
