EVANSVILLE, Ind.--The University of Evansville cross country teams kicked off their 2007 season Saturday with a pair of second-place finishes at the 2007 Mid-America Opener at the UE Cross Country Course in Evansville, Indiana.

Both the UE men and women finished second as a team to Big East power Louisville in the team scoring, however, numerous Purple Aces posted personal-best 6- and 4-K times on the cross country course on a bright, sunny day in Evansville.

On the men’s side, sophomores Greg Pulscher (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) and Nicholas Tyree (Mitchell, Ind./Mitchell) both turned in personal-best times, clocking in with 6-K marks of 19:02 and 19:30 respectively to finish ninth and 11th overall.  Freshman Ryan Witters (Evansville, Ind./Memorial), sophomore Brian Joyce (Evansville, Ind./Central), and sophomore Brian Denny (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) were not far behind, all finishing within 15 seconds of one another to place in the overall Top 15 and round out the scoring for the Purple Aces.  Louisville, which finished 15th at last year’s NCAA Championships took home the team title, while Louisville senior Wesley Korir, who placed 11th in the NCAA Southeast Regional last year, won the individual title in a time of 17:37.48.

On the women’s side, senior Andrea Sonnenschein (Poy Sippi, Wis/Berlin) once again paced the Purple Aces, finishing eighth overall in a time of 15:29.50.  Fellow senior Andrea Hoy (Mt. Vernon, Ill./Mt. Vernon Township) also cracked the 16-minute barrier in the 4-K for the first time in her UE career, as she finished ninth overall with a 4-K time of 15:53.81.  Sophomore Courtney Heller (16:24.17--11th), freshman Melissa Truex (16:44.75--12th), and senior Jaclyn Kern (17:16.48--16th) rounded out the Purple Aces’ scoring.  Louisville cruised to the women’s team title behind 2006 NCAA All-Regional runner Tarah McKay’s individual title, which came in a time of 14:29.80.

“Overall, I was really pleased with the effort today by the team,” said UE head coach Don Walters.  “We had a lot of PR times set today, and that is a great way to start the season.

“Today’s meet was a lot of fun because not only did we get to run in front of the home crowd, but we also got to run with and meet some of our alumni.  I know that a lot of the alumni who raced today had a great time, and we are hoping to make this an annual part of this race in the future.”

1992 UE graduate Tom Goldsby paced the alumni charge on the men’s side, finishing 16th overall in a 6-K time of 19:56.59.  On the women’s side, 2005 UE graduate Amy Lochmondy paced a trio of female alumnae on the course by finishing 26th overall in a 4-K time of 18:22.26.  In all, 16 cross country and track alumni of Evansville were able to return for Saturday’s meet, including UE Hall of Fame runner David Denny, who saw his son Brian place 15th overall.

The UE cross country teams will return to the course next weekend, as the Purple Aces will travel south to compete in the Fleet Feet Sports/Earl Jacoby Memorial presented by the University of Alabama-Huntsville.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
