CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Defense has carried the Northern Iowa Panthers to a 10-3 record this season, and after Wednesday night, the University of Evansville Purple Aces know why. The Panthers improved their Missouri Valley Conference record to 2-0 with their 64-51 win, leaving the Aces at 5-7 overall and 0-2 in the MVC.
UNI held the Aces to 29 percent shooting. The Panthers broke an 18-18 tie 14 minutes into the first half by scoring 12 straight points to take the 30-18 advantage. Evansville dropped behind by 16 points in the second half before making a 9-0 run to make it 50-43. That's as close as the Aces could get, despite the 13 points of Pieter van Tongeren and the 12 points and 11 rebounds of 'Victor Gomez, the Aces' lone senior.
The Aces return home to Roberts Stadium Sunday to play the Drake Bulldogs at 2:05 CST. Drake is now 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the MVC after winning tonight against Southern Illinois.
