University of Evansville basketball fans will be in for a treat on Saturday, as for just $2.00, they can catch two games and help out a great cause, as the sixth annual Women’s Hoops For The Cure will kick off a Saturday night Evansville basketball doubleheader at Roberts Stadium. Tip-off of the UE-Southern Illinois women’s game is set for 5:00 p.m.
The UE women will ride a four-game winning streak into Saturday’s Hoops For The Cure, while standing at 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Purple Aces have been on fire of late, winning five of the last six games, while holding five of the last six opponents to 60 points or less. Evansville notched its fourth victory in a row on Thursday night, as the Purple Aces knocked off Lipscomb, 69-57, in Nashville, Tennessee behind five players who scored in double-figures.
Southern Illinois will bring a 7-9 overall record and 3-3 Valley mark into Saturday’s game. The Salukis are the defending MVC regular-season champions, although SIU has been hit hard by injuries this season. Leading scorer Jasmine Gibson (17.1 ppg) has missed the last three games due to a stress fracture in her foot, but the Salukis still feature a potent offensive attack anchored by senior forward Jayme Sweere (13.4 ppg, 7.1 rpg), junior guard Erica Smith (11.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg), and rookie sharpshooters Ellen Young (12.8 ppg) and Tanaeya Worden (7.8 ppg).
Saturday’s Hoops For The Cure is a collaborative effort between the UE athletics department, the UE?women’s basketball program, and the Greater Evansville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For The Cure to try and help raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer in the Tri-State area. The event has raised over $22,000 over the last five years, with a majority of the money remaining in the Tri-State area to assist breast cancer research.
Half of the ticket proceeds from Saturday’s game will go directly to the Greater Evansville Affiliate of the Komen Foundation. Komen will also be selling commemorative t-shirts for $5.00 and there will be a raffle of various gift prizes and sports memorabilia, with all money from both going to the Komen Foundation. The first 500 fans in attendance will also receive a free special edition UE hat, and every fan who purchases a $2.00 ticket to the women’s game before halftime will also receive free admission to the men’s game against Missouri State later that night.
“I really hope that the people of the Tri-State area will come out and support this great cause tomorrow,”?said UE head coach Tricia Cullop. “Tomorrow’s game is about more than basketball, it is about trying to help in the fight against breast cancer in the Tri-State area. The Komen Foundation does so much for the people in the Tri-State area, and we are very proud to be able to partner with them for this event once again.”
Saturday’s game can be heard live in the Tri-State area on the Aces’ Radio Network (91.5 F.M.-WUEV, 100.5 F.M.-WSJD, 103.9 F.M.-WNTC).
