SOUTHAVEN, Miss.--The University of Evansville softball team split a pair of games Sunday at the University of Memphis Blues City Classic. The Aces lost a close game to Morehead State with the Eagles taking the 1-0 victory. The Aces rallied later in the day to defeat Alabama A&M 7-4.
Jacki Bradley and Kristen Shirk were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts over the weekend and the Aces finished third with a record of 3-1. Morehead State won the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record with Memphis coming in second with a 3-1 record. Runs allowed determined the tiebreaker between Memphis and UE.
Vs. Morehead State
The first game of the day featured a pitching duel between Evansville’s Jacki Bradley and MSU’s Alex Gjevre.
Bradley only gave up two hits in the game but one of the hits was a walk-off home run by MSU’s Rebecca Butler to end the game. Korey Ellis had the other hit for the Eagles. Bradley struck out five and did not walk a batter. Gjevre picked up the complete game victory while striking out three and allowing one hit.
Bradley had the Aces’ lone hit of the day with a single in the top of the seventh inning to spoil Gjevre’s no hitter. The only other Evansville player to reach base was Kristen Shirk who was hit by a pitch three times in the game.
Vs. Alabama A&M
The Aces scored five runs in the first inning en route to a 7-4 victory over Alabama A&M in the Aces’ second game Sunday.
Brittany Herald was able to reach base on an error by the leftfielder, which allowed Amanda Ockomon to score from second for the Aces’ first run of the game. After a base hit by Krista Price, Cassey Kemna hit a sacrifice fly to score Herald from third. Bradley drove in Price with a single up the middle and Jamie Lindauer added two more runs with a home run to right field to score Bradley.
Laura Rather led the Aces at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Ockomon, Shirk, Herald, and Fehlman also had hits for the Aces.
Jennifer McKee picked up another win. The sophomore gave up two runs on two hits in three innings of work. Ashley Hobbs picked up her first save of the season. She pitched four innings of relief giving up two run and striking out seven batters.
The Aces will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Austin Peay for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
